Lonely and shy bachelor Monsieur Hire (Michel Blanc), suspected in the murder of a girl, secretly watches his young, attractive neighbor Alice (Sandrine Bonnaire) through the window. Once, when lightning flashes during a thunderstorm, she notices his face in the window and comes to him to find out what he is after. Adapting Georges Simenon's novel, Patrice Leconte emphasized the psychological drama rather than the detective story and created a film about loneliness and voyeurism; his cold precision is reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock or Fritz Lang. The low-key acting and moody soundtrack add a lot, but it's the director who deserves the most accolades, as he manages, with only glances and gestures, to achieve a degree of eroticism that other films fail to reach even through explicit sex scenes.





Solid and perfectly paced camera work and direction, players of exquisite talent and nuance, make this Simenon novel adaptation a powerful film. The winsomeness and cunning of Bonnaire, one of France's great actresses as the love object; the fanatic and unsettling calm conviction of the police detective played by Andre Wilms; the furtiveness, loneliness, and longing of the brilliant Michel Blanc; and the cowardliness and thugness of Thullier, a man made to play the thug, combine to make both a believable tale and a great metaphor for our need for "the other." Pero no dice nada, por si el extraño en las sombras hubiera presenciado los eventos de cierta noche que se suponía que nadie vería...” Así presentaba el Festival de Cannes 1989 al film que suponía un giro radical en la filmografía de Patrice Leconte, hasta entonces dedicado con regular fortuna a la comedia: esta adaptación de la novela El noviazgo de Monsieur Hire (que ya había sido llevada al cine por Julien Duvivier, bajo el título de Pánico, en 1946) inauguró la constante trágica, desencadenada por la asimetría de las parejas protagonistas o por el choque de mundos incompatibles, que recorre desde entonces su obra. En ese movimiento, Leconte llevó consigo al comediante Blanc, quien compone aquí a un hombrecito gris, inquietante; un sastre voyeurista, misántropo y sospechoso de un crimen pero que, con todo, logra despertar compasión antes que repulsión. Las mejores versiones fílmicas de Simenon se acercan más al estudio psicológico que al thriller o al policial; Monsieur Hire lo consigue –mérito no menor– con un relato que se mueve, sinuoso, entre La ventana indiscreta y La bella y la bestia.
