Six vignettes follow the Allied invasion from July 1943 to winter 1944, from Sicily north to Venice. Communication is fragile. A woman leads an Allied patrol through a mine field; she dies protecting a G.I., but the Yanks think she killed him. A street urchin steals shoes from a G.I. who tracks him to a shanty town. A G.I. meets a woman the day Rome is liberated; in six months they meet again: he's cynical, she's a whore. A US nurse braves the trip across the Arno into German fire in search of a partisan she loves. Three chaplains, including a Jew, call on a monastery north in the Apennines. Allied soldiers and partisans try to escape capture in the marshes of the Po.

Ganadora de un conspicuo número de premios cinematográficos, entre los cuales se encuentra la copa Anica de la XI Muestra de Venecia en 1946, Paisà es el segundo eslabón de la trilogía bélica realizada por Roberto Rossellini. En los seis episodios que la componen, diferentes entre sí por su estilo narrativo, la película relata el avance de las tropas aliadas por la Península durante la segunda guerra mundial. En el primer episodio, ambientado en Sicilia, un grupo de soldados norteamericanos desembarca en un pequeño pueblo del cual los nazis se están retirando. Una joven del lugar, Carmela, los guía por los campos que los alemanes han minado. Mientras el grupo avanza, Carmela se entretiene con un soldado de guardia; el joven se desploma víctima de una bala alemana y también Carmela muere, cayendo al precipicio. El segundo episodio transcurre en Nápoles. Un soldado estadounidense persigue por las calles de la ciudad a un pequeño limpiabotas que le ha robado los zapatos. Cuando lo encuentra, el militar, conmovido por la miseria que obliga al niño a robar, lo deja escapar. En el sexto y último episodio, paracaidistas y partisanos combaten arduamente contra sus enemigos en el delta del Po, pero los nazis se imponen y la batalla se resuelve en una feroz masacre.
