Archie Bell & The Drells - Tightening It Up: The Best Of Archie Bell & The Drells (1994)
EAC, FLAC tracks, CUE+LOG | Artwork | 446 MB
R&B | 5% recovery record | Source: Internet - Rhino CD

It could be assumed that Archie Bell & the Drells essentially did the same thing over and over again, since "Tighten Up" almost consigns them to the level of one-hit wonders, but that's not an accurate assessment of their gifts. True, they often followed the same stylish, sunny, utterly infectious sound, but there was a lot more depth and variety there, as Rhino's terrific 20-track collection Tightening It Up: The Best of Archie Bell & the Drells illustrates.

The Beginning Of The End - Funky Nassau (1971) Repost
EAC, FLAC tracks, CUE+LOG | Artwork | 268 MB
Rock | 5% recovery record | Source: Internet - 2001 Alston CD SD 379

Thirty years after its maiden voyage, Funky Nassau sails again on a digitally remastered CD. Their number 15 pop smash "Funky Nassau Part 1 & 2" is the cream of this hands-on production by the Bahamas natives. The nine cuts fuses island rhythms and American jazz/funk into a doable, choppy mixture featuring guitars, bass, drums, and scratch vocals. Misclassified as a disco band, the Beginning of the End served up breezy Phil Upchurch-esque sounds, with "Come Down" and "Surrey Ride" being prime examples.

In the world of early rhythm & blues and doo wop, Hank Ballard was the very definition of earthiness. Though influenced by high-energy gospel vocal groups, Ballard's music with the Midnighters couldn't have been more diametrically opposed in terms of subject matter: his lyrics were filled with raunchy double-entendres that left little to the imagination, pushing the envelope of what was considered acceptable in the '50s.
