The companion CD to the film from director Lynne Ramsey (Ratcatcher, Gasman) isn't just a soundtrack--it's also a plot device; these 14 tracks, which range from gamelan drumming to a rollicking ditty from Ween's bizarre 12 Golden Country Greats, compose a mix tape left for the titular heroine by her boyfriend before he committed suicide. Consequently, an individual, yet not inaccessible, inner logic guides the programming, through hipster staples by the Velvet Underground and Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood to a judicious handful of contributions from Warp stable artists ("Nannou," a whirring symphony of wind-up toys by Aphex Twin, proves a captivating capper to the disc). But it's the cuts from or inspired by Kraut rock pioneers Can, from the jittery funk of "I Want More" to bassist Holger Czukay's goofy "Cool in the Pool" and the multipart "Blue Milk (Edit)" by Can disciples Stereolab, that best convey the mix of introspection and absurdity that permeate this mesmerizing set. – Kurt B. You'll love this album. It's a guarantee. It's taken from one of the greatest dramas I've ever seen. This drama made me feel so many emotions - happiness, sadness, loneliness, and inspiration. It had me falling out of my seat laughing, then staring wide-eyed at the screen crying. It's a story about friendship that stays with you for a long time.

The most famous unused film score in the repertoire, Alex North's music for Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey languished in obscurity until the release of this album in 1993. Unknown to the composer, Kubrick rejected North's original compositions in favour of pre-recorded classical tracks; this revival by long-time North friend and Hollywood legend Jerry Goldsmith goes a long way toward redressing the injustice. Though the disc offers a track-by-track description of each cue, North's score is divided into two distinct parts and stands up exceptionally well when divorced from the film. The first movement is a dark, excursion into man's past. After an imaginative paraphrase of Strauss's Also sprach Zarathustra for the main credits, North creates an objective, primitive atmosphere in order to reflect the unforgiving nature of the prehistoric land ("The Foraging"). Part two takes the listener on a journey to a future in which technology has triumphed; the highlight of this section is "Space Station Docking", a scherzo and waltz that is both magical and impressionistic. Whether North's score would have improved Kubrick's film is a moot point--what matters is that this sublime score has now been preserved for the ages.
