Cole Porter, né le 9 juin 1891 à Peru (Indiana), mort le 15 octobre 1964 à Santa Monica (Californie), est un compositeur et parolier américain, auteur de quelques unes des plus célèbres comédies musicales de la scène américaine (créées à Broadway). On lui doit Kiss Me, Kate (1948, adaptée de La Mégère apprivoisée de William Shakespeare), Anything Goes, Can-Can... ; ainsi que de très nombreuses chansons : Night and Day, I Get a Kick Out of You, You're The Top, I've Got You Under My Skin, I Love Paris, C'est Magnifique... Il connut le succès grâce à ses textes subtils et spirituels, jouant souvent sur les sous-entendus, et à sa musique aux formes et aux rythmes complexes. Beaucoup de ses créations comptent parmi les plus célèbres du Grand répertoire américain de la chanson et les grands standards du jazz. Cole Porter est l'un des rares compositeurs américains qui ait écrit à la fois la musique et les paroles de ses chansons.

The first of two fine guitar duet recordings with Phillip Catherine. Of the two, Catherine's sound is more rooted in the tradition of Django Reinhardt and tends to be more introspective. Coryell is his usual incorrigible self; however, Catherine's presence seemed to inspire more experimentation and intelligent playing on Coryell's part. As expected, this session will appeal primarily to guitarists — and for good reason, as both players exploit their chops — but it should be noted that the compositions here are quite memorable. Whether soloing over one riff ("Mortgage on Your Soul"), playing the blues ("Twin House"), or showing off ("Airpower"), this is an excellent collaboration and one of Coryell's most ambitious performances. Somethin' Else is regarded as a landmark album in the hard bop and cool styles. This LP is notable for the presence and prominent contributions of Miles Davis, in one of his few recording dates for Blue Note Records. Many critics and jazz fans consider Somethin' Else to be among the greatest jazz albums of all time. The Penguin Guide to Jazz selected this album as part of its suggested "Core Collection."

Altoist Rosario Giuliani is not well known outside of his native Italy, but he should be. On the inspired outing Duets for Trane, he performs nine songs composed by John Coltrane as duets with pianist Franco d'Andrea. The interplay between the musicians is reminiscent of Lee Konitz and Lennie Tristano; in fact, this set gives one an idea of what Konitz and Tristano might have sounded like if they had explored a full set of Coltrane tunes. Their interpretations are fresh and extend the ideas of the songs, which not only include the minor blues "Equinox" and "Giant Steps" but a 12-and-a-half minute rendition of the themes from "A Love Supreme." The memorable set concludes with Giuliani playing unaccompanied on "Solo for Trane." A classic of its kind. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
