Looking for Trouble: Recognizing and Meeting Threats in Chess
Publisher:Russell Enterprises, Inc | 2003 | ISBN: 1888690186 | Pages: 146 | PDF | 1.6 MB

I almost passed this one up but I'm sure glad I didn't. As a player rated in the 1600 - 1800 range, I'm often frustrated to see a "crushing" win swept away in one careless move. I get so wrapped up in my own plans that I often ignore those of my opponent. Ugh! Although it is easy to say "always try to understand what your opponent's move was threatening before making your move", I tend to play fast and impatiently (even when not in any time trouble). Heisman's book is great because it forces you to solve the problems in 2 stages - identify the threat, then figure out the remedy.

The Chess Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes
Publisher: Avon | 1979| ISBN:0394737571 | Pages: 288 | PDF | 7.6 MB

I think the 2-star reviewer misses the point of this book: it's supposed to be fun. And it is. The puzzles are pretty challenging, and it definitely helps if you play chess. You tend to notice positional abnormalities that are the bases of the problems. From there, it's just detective work. But the real treat to this book is the world the author creates. Smullyan's characters can't play chess for nuts. You should see the bizarre positions they come up with - it's as though they're making random moves. Yet this doesn't diminish their love of the game one bit. They're such gentlemen too. No one minds when Dr. Holmes interrupts to ask questions. His new friends are always polite and like nothing more than a good demonstration of deductive reasoning. I wish I lived in their world.

A Primer of Chess

Great mind's strategies put in Everyman language. That pretty sums this book up.I have found this book to be easy to follow as well as very insightful. Capablanca was a world class chess champion, but his terminology for this work is far from aloof. It is down to earth and to the point. He goes over rules, opening moves, middle game and ending. His points on strategy are priceless. I highly recommend this book to any beginner; it will improve your game - fast!

The Basis of Combination in Chess
Publisher:Dover Publications | 1978 | ISBN: 0486236447 | Pages: 213 | PDF | 2.7 MB

Wonderful Explanation of Each Piece's Power. This book shows the unique abilities of each piece and the typical ways to combine the action of pieces to build combinations. The many examples are taken mostly from actual grandmaster games. This book will amply reward the time spent studying it. I found myself spotting combinations much more often and actually able to plan using pieces together after reading it. The author had a lot of help from Alekhine. It is a shame this classic is out of print. If you can find a copy, buy it.

Play the King's Indian: A Complete Repertoire for Black in this most Dynamic of Openings
Publisher: Everyman Chess | 2004 | ISBN: 1857443241 | Pages: 208 | PDF | 9 MB

I am writing this review fresh after slaughtering a cheeky 1.d4 player who attempted the Petrosian system against my WELL INFORMED Kings Indian. Indeed, I can still taste the victory; after sacrificing 2 pawns I gained a devastating initiative on the kingside. Here is a quote from the book (Main Line): "White will attempt to tear Black from limb to limb on the queenside while Black will endeavour to hang, draw, and quarter White on the kingside. Sometimes both sides succeed in their aim and then Black wins. That is the advantage of attacking the King". I just want to add to other reviewers by giving my thoughts on this book as compared to Gallaghers other fantastic book: "Starting Out: the Kings Indian". I was completely new to the Kings Indian prior to buying SOKID and it helped with some of the basic themes but, after buying PTKID shortly thereafter, I will not be going back to that other book. PTKID is just so much richer in ideas etc. So if you really are just starting out in the KID, but are somewhat strapped for cash, I would recommend you to get PTKID first, so long as you are not a beginning chess player. (Again, SOKID is a fantastic book. It explains the typical themes w/ diagrams, etc. very well). Happy hunting!

360 Brilliant and Instructive End Games.
Publisher: Dover Pubns | 1968 | ISBN: 0486219593 | Pages: 192 | PDF | 6.6 MB

A.A. Troitzky's "Three Hundred Sixty Brilliant and Instructive End Games" is by far the best book of its kind that I have ever owned. Very subtle, very crafty endgame studies -- many of them very long and complicated, but all of them beautifully constructed and analyzed. Unlike most books of chess puzzles, the positions in this book appear to be reasonably reachable in a real game, but they are all masterfully conceived -- at least, the ones I've had the energy and stamina to follow.

Winning Chess Tactics (Winning Chess)
Publisher: Everyman Chess | 2003 | ISBN: 1857443330 | Pages: 256 | PDF | 7.6 MB

If you are a beginner chess player, with a rating below say 1400, and you are bewildered by the array of chess material ... rest easy. This book and tactics and this entire series of chess titles are absolutely excellent, and the best presented and thought out thematic chess books aimed at lower rated players in a way people can easily digest. Seriwan and Silman have created a deceptively simple formula for articulating complex points, and present the material with succinctness and clarity. Really this series is the defacto education plan and reference set for the beginner to U1400 player. Sadly i bought many titles before this series was published .. you can spare yourself wasted time and money.

R. Smullyan, "The Chess Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes"
Hutchinson | ISBN: 0091405319 | 1980 | 171 pages | OCR | PDF & DOC | 7.52 Mb

The dazzlingly clever and always entertaining Raymond Smullyan takes an unorthodox approach to chess puzzles by treating them as mysteries--with Sherlock Holmes as guide and mentor. The key concept is retrograde analysis. Rather than figuring out how to achieve some end from a given arrangement of chess pieces, the game is to examine the board and deduce what has happened in the past: On what square was the White queen captured? or, Is the White queen promoted or original?...To enjoy these problems you need only know how chess pieces move.
