"Color and Culture: Black Writers and the Making of the Modern Intellectual" by Ross Posnock
Harvard University Press | 1998 | ISBN: 0674143094 | 367 pages | PDF | 20 Mb

The book offers a much needed and startlingly new historical perspective on "black intellectuals" as a social category, ranging over a century - from Frederick Douglass to Patricia Williams, from Du Bois, Pauline Hopkins, and Charles Chesnutt to Nella Larsen, Zora Neale Hurston, and Alain Locke, from Ralph Ellison and James Baldwin to Samuel Delany and Adrienne Kennedy. These writers challenge two durable assumptions: that high culture is "white culture" and that racial uplift is the sole concern of the black intellectual.

Encyclopedia of Clothing and Fashion Volume 3: Occult Dress to Zoran, Index
Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons | ISBN: 0684313944 | edition 2004 | PDF | 562 pages | 14,9 mb

From diapers to Dior, saris to serapes, the world of clothing is nearly as vast and as ancient as the human race. Tracing the stylistic and functional threads that unite clothing across time and cul-tures -- as well as delving into the divergent styles and significance of apparel -- this A to Z encyclopedia is the essential resource for exploring the relationship between culture and couture.
This broad-based set surveys clothing, body adornment, and examines the origins of clothing, the development of fabrics and technologies, and the social meanings of dress. It also presents information on representative costumes from a wide variety of historical eras, which are frequently the topic of student research. Topics range from the bustle, sari, and toga to Polyester and body piercing. The short entries explain the history of garments (necktie, codpiece, cocktail dress, bathing suit, burqua, Nehru jacket), techniques and manufactures (batik, dry cleaning, zipper, stone washing), body adornment (makeup, mask, tattoo, wig), and important persons and institutions (Coco Chanel, Edith Head, Yves Saint-Laurent, Fashion Institute of Technology). The longer essays provide cultural context: class, gender, sumptuary laws, costume design for stage and screen, advertising; fashion careers; ecclesiastical dress; military uniforms; etc.

Peter Howard Fries, Michael Cummings - Relations And Functions Within And Around Language
Continuum | ISBN: 0826478751 | 2005-07 | PDF | 399 pages | 17 Mb

This book describes language as a network of functional relations involving a context which is also a network of functional relations. The essays in Part I present several perspectives on the theory of language as functional relations. The essays in Part II discuss an oral text using a variety of functional perspectives. All of the essays are by linguists interested in oral and written texts who have achieved international recognition in their fields. Illustrated in this book are cognitive, social construction, social praxis and anthropological approaches to the description of text. Currently in linguistics there is a movement towards careful use of corpora in linguistic and text analysis. This movement has involved the use of written corpora, spoken corpora and corpora which consist of combinations of spoken and written text. But little detailed discussion of the language of a single oral text from multiple perspectives has been published. Most text analyzes address written texts - often literary works. This book is among the first to integrate the analysis of the language of spoken and written texts.
Ayhan Aksu-Koç - The Acquisition of Aspect and Modality: The Case of Past Reference in Turkish

Ayhan Aksu-Koç - The Acquisition of Aspect and Modality: The Case of Past Reference in Turkish
Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 0521024013 | 2022-02-13 | DJVU | 260 pages | 1.38 Mb

Aksu-Koç's empirical research on Turkish children's acquisition of the past tense forms the basis for this original and important contribution to the current debate among psycholinguists on the interrelationship between language and cognitive development. Turkish, in its grammar, makes a clear distinction between direct and indirect experience, separating personal observation of processes from both inference and narrative. This distinction thus provides an ideal method of observing linguistic and neurolinguistic conceptual development. Aksu-Koç exploits this technique to its full advantage in a study conducted across a wide range of ages. The data are meticulously analyzed and the theoretical implications for a neo-Piagetian paradigm are carefully considered.
