I Solisti Veneti is one of the first rank of small Italian orchestras. Founded in Padua in 1959 by Claudio Scimone it has made a reputation especially with Italian Baroque music, recording many works by Antonio Vivaldi, Tomaso Albinoni, Francesco Geminiani, Benedetto Marcello and Giuseppe Tartini. Giuliano Carmignola and Piero Toso are two of the soloists in the ensemble. The group has made over 300 recordings, many on the Erato record label. A number of these were first-ever recordings of works of Vivaldi, Albinoni and Rossini.

This disc, volume seven in the Kodály’s cycle of the Schubert quartets, should prove a revelation to anyone unfamiliar with the composer’s early works, everything here produced while he was still in his teens. Maybe he was not quite the prodigy that Mendelssohn was at the same age. Nonetheless, the youthful Schubert possessed an imagination and daring that remain astonishing for an adolescent and—even more than in his first four symphonies (also teenage productions)—suggest the influence of Beethoven.

Schubert composed his final string quartet during 1826, and it appropriate that this masterpiece should be positioned at the threshold of his wonderful last phase. Yet he was still in his twenties when he wrote it. The G major Quartet is wholly original in style, in its adaptation of the tradition of the Viennese classical style inherited from Haydn and Mozart. Moreover the music has an ambition and spirituality which link its outlook to that of the late Beethoven quartets with which it is contemporary.

Franz Schubert was born in 1797, the son of a Vienna schoolmaster, and had his education as a chorister of the Imperial Chapel at the Staatskonvikt. Both at school and at home he had an active musical life as a player and as a composer, and when his voice broke and he was offered the means to continue his academic education, he decided instead to train as a teacher, thus being able to devote more time to music.

"The Kodály Quartet is particularly good in D112, shaping the lyrical themes of the first movement with gentle flexibility creating a beautiful dusky sonority for the G minor Andante and giving the lusty minuet a real Schuhplattler earthiness. Crucially, too, the players relish the delicacy and wit of the finale. The Kodály's warmth and uncomplicated honesty of approach also work well in the earlier quartets."

It was conventional in Schubert's day to start musical education as a chorister, and young Franz had the honour of being a member of the Imperial Chapel in Vienna. He was born in 1797, the son of a schoolmaster, and his membership of the choir gave him access to the highest education. He decided to forego that in order to follow in his father's footsteps as a schoolteacher, but soon found he did not enjoy that profession, and spent as much time as he could studying composition with Salieri.

This recording by the Kodaly Quartet includes one of Schubert's "earlier" (1813) quartets (# 10, D 87) and one of his better-known later (1824) ones (# 13, D 804, the "Rosamunde"). It's a good introduction to Schubert's charming quartet style.

Of the fifteen works Schubert wrote for string quartet, seven were composed while he was at school, a chorister in the Imperial Chapel and a pupil of the Staatskonvikt and five of these during his last year there. Born in Vienna in 1797, the son and nephew of schoolmasters who had moved to the city from Moravia, he had every encouragement to musical activity at home. His father played the cello, his eldest brother Ignaz, born two months after his parents' marriage, the violin, the instrument of Ferdinand, three years Franz Schubert's senior, while the composer played the viola.

In the disc's liner notes we're urged to judge Vivaldi's place "in the pantheon of great baroque composers" on the "stand-alone quality of his music" and not on errant or offhand claims of this or that musicologist. Well, owing to violinist Rachel Podger's stunning, fiercely energetic, ardently expressive, and technically assured performances and the ravishing orchestral support from the Polish period-instrument ensemble Arte Dei Suonatori, our task as listeners certainly is an easy and prodigiously enjoyable one. And that's not all the good news: this is truly one of those sonic "events" where the performers have an almost palpable presence, their sound is absolutely faithful and natural, and the balances are right on. Go ahead and turn this one up--you'll be immediately bathed in glorious, vibrant string sound, and be pleasantly surprised by the potential of Vivaldi's music to actually hold your undivided attention for an hour--maybe more.
