Georg Friedrich Haas - in vain, for 24 instruments (2003)
classical / avant-garde | FLAC, no cue, no log | 260 MB, RS
Label: Kairos 0012332KAI | Time: 63:11

Georg Friedrich Haas' style recalls that of György Ligeti in its use of micropolyphony, microintervals and exploitation of the overtone series. Haas' "In Vain, for 24 instruments" is an outrageously successful example of layer upon layer of serialistic leitmotifs that cannot be singled out, as if they were phobic to 'empty spaces'. Haas' leitmotifs are to be grasped massively as they are intended to overpopulate the space they occupy not with hints (à la Nørgaard) but with their very bodily presence, explicit and assertive.

Somei Satoh: Kisetsu, Kyokoku and Violin Concerto
classical / avant-garde | EAC (FLAC, cue, log) | 188 MB, RS
Label: Camerata, 2004 | Time: 62:55

In the post-Takemitsu era, Somei Satoh has steadily been gaining notoriety as one of Japan’s most internationally celebrated and significant composers of contemporary music. A largely self-taught musician, he came to the technical elements of music not from the usual perspective of western proportions and balance of harmony, counterpoint and orchestration, but rather from a deep understanding of the philosophies of Shinto and Zen Buddhist beliefs. This background reveals a music that delights in the world of infinite spaces and suspended time. His works are fragile in their clarity and simplicity, but are not simplistic or facile. His work represents a kind of sculptural minimalism infused with the lyrical sense of Romanticism. He wrote his violin concerto for Anne Akiko Meyers.

Someone interested in La Monte Young's music faces a challenge: none of his works are available. Until Young signed to Gramavision in 1987, his recorded legacy was issued by a series of obscure labels, all of which have since disappeared. The Well-Tuned Piano, The Second Dream of the High-Tension Line Stepdown Transformer From the Four Dreams of China and Just Stompin' managed to obtain the releases only for it to get deleted all of Young's titles when Gramavision was taken over by Rykodisc.

Maria Ana Bobone - Nome de Mar (2006)
APE, EAC, no CUE, no LOG, Covers | 225 MB, RS
Fado, Folk, Baroque | Release: 2006 | Playing time: 42'

NOME DE MAR by Maria Ana Bobone is in large Fado album but it leads the singer to the territories of baroque, traditional Portuguese music and beautiful themes by Ricardo Rocha. The most amazing and charming is that the beautiful voice of Maria Ana Bobone moves easily over these various areas. In turn, the genius of Ricardo Rocha is well marked in the instrumental version of Canção de Alcipe. Of course, Ricardo Rocha shines here on guitar Portuguese (to hear him is always a privilege).

Interweaving documentary and fiction, this DVD introduces us to the musical world of Franz Schubert (1797-1828). His too-short life was marked by a ceaseless quest for beauty and the perpetual presence of death.

Henryk Mikolaj Górecki - Miserere - Broad Waters
FLAC | Cue, No Log, EAC, Covers, Booklet| 250 MB, RS
Contemporary | Label: Nonesuch, 1994

When placing Górecki in the context of the history of modern art, musicologist and critics generally compare his work with such composers as Olivier Messiaen and Charles Ives. He himself has said that he also feels kindred with such figures as Bach, Mozart, and Joseph Haydn, though he has said he feels most affinity towards Franz Schubert, particularly in terms of tonal design and treatment of basic materials. Since Górecki's move away from serialism and dissonance in the 1970s, he is frequently compared to composers such as Arvo Pärt, John Tavener and Giya Kancheli. The term holy minimalism is often used to group these composers, due to their shared simplified approach to texture, tonality and melody, in works often reflecting deeply held religious beliefs. However, none of these composers has admitted to common influences.

Explore the life and music of Frédéric Chopin (1810 - 1849) Freely inspired by the life of the great Polish composer of piano music Frédéric Chopin and more specifically by his romantic liaison with the celebrated French novelist George Sand, this documentary style film is structured around two mature works by the musician and writer: Sonata for Piano and Cello by Chopin and Story of My Life by George Sand. The composer’s music is brought to life on screen through a choreographic staging where actors and dancers, who are seen alternately by themselves or in the company of musicians, attempt to recreate, within a symbolic décor, the universe inhabited by the two lovers.
