Then Play On is the third studio album by blues-rock band Fleetwood Mac, first released in September 1969. It was the first of their original albums to feature Danny Kirwan and the last with Peter Green. The record, appearing after the group's sudden success in the pop charts, offered a broader stylistic range than the classic blues of the group's first two albums. This was the band's first release with Warner/Reprise after being lured away from Blue Horizon and a one-off with Immediate Records. The album, which at its original UK release had an unusually long running time, has been released with four different song lineups. The currently-available CD compiles all songs from the two US LP versions, both of which omitted tracks from the original UK version. Wikipedia

Burnin' Red Ivanhoe was formed back in 1967, and that makes them one of the first Scandinavian prog bands. Their style was quite original from the start, blending jazz-rock with R&B, blues, psychedelia etc. Their debut from 1969 (double album) "M144" sounds somewhat like The Who with jazz influences. Most of Burnin' Red Ivanhoe's albums have that certain Scandinavian touch to them, similar to early 70's prog groups such as Wigwam, Culpeper's Orchard and Tasavallan Presidentti. In 1971, the band released the album "W.W.W.", which is probably a good place to start, as it contains some of their most progressive and interesting work. The self-titled album they released in 1970 (another gem!), also contains the track "Secret Oyster Service", and quite soon after that, a new, even more jazz-orientated group was formed, called Secret Oyster. Burnin' Red Ivanhoe was disbanded in 1972 (although they released one more album in 1974), and as a result, most members moved over to Secret Oyster. Progarchives.

Sounds Incorporated were a saxophone-led instrumental style sextet, from Dartford, Kent, England. The group formed in 1961 and had their first taste of success backing Gene Vincent for his UK tour as a replacement for The Blue Caps who had been denied British work permits. Whilst performing in Hamburg in 1963 Sounds Incorporated gained the attention of The Beatles and were subsequently signed to NEMS by Brian Epstein. The group toured with The Beatles as the opening act, including the famous Shea Stadium concert in New York. Sounds Incorporated began releasing singles on the Columbia label, gaining moderate success in the UK charts. Their third single "William Tell" reached #2 in the Australian charts in 1964, the same year that the band released their first eponymous album, which contained many stage favourites, and became a regular backing group for Cilla Black.

High Tide were a heavy group from the time when the heavy metal style was not so rigidly set as to preclude a more experimental approach like this. A heavily distorted guitar is here partnered by an electric violin (courtesy of Simon House, who was later to join Hawkwind) and the two instruments manage to create an extraordinary maelstrom of sound. The singer, meanwhile is a Jim Morrison sound-alike, the slightly doom-laden voice sounding very effective in this context. Record Collector

Alongside their Detroit-area brethren the Stooges, MC5 essentially laid the foundations for the emergence of punk; deafeningly loud and uncompromisingly intense.
In 1969 they signed to Atlantic, where producer Jon Landau was installed to helm their second album, 1970's 'Back in the U.S.A.'; with their manager, political activist Sinclair out of the picture, jailed for possession of marijuana, the music's political stance vanished as well, with a newly stripped-down, razor-sharp sound replacing the feedback-driven fury of before. The sons of fiddler Ted Furey from Ireland, Finbar and Eddie rose to fame in the '60s. Finbar is a flamboyant and forceful uillean piper who won his first all-Ireland championship at the age of 15, while Eddie is a singer and guitarist. They have been members of the Furey Brothers and Davey Arthur, but their most charming recordings are the ones they did as a duo. Steve Winick AMG

...There are so many abrupt twists in the music here that you don't know what's coming next. The brilliant 'Man's Best Friend' (it's a gun, according to the ironic lyric) begins with a startling Spanish guitar intro before fuzzed up electric guitar and drums bludgeon their way in. 'Oriented' is a marvellous instrumental, as exotic as the title suggests. And, although there's a lot of experimentation going on, the tracks are well-crafted and accessible. DJH Thorn

Anthony "Duster" Bennett (23 September 2021 – 26 March 2022) was a British blues singer and musician. Based around London, his first album Smiling Like I'm Happy saw him playing as a one-man band. Playing a bass drum and hi-hat with his feet, and blowing a harmonica on a rack while strumming his Les Paul Goldtop guitar. Backed by his girlfriend Stella Sutton and the original Fleetwood Mac on three tracks, the album was well-received among blues fans. He was very popular on the local blues club scene until his death in a car crash in 1976. Wikipedia

Pairing poet Terry Durham with talents including avant-garde saxophonist Evan Parker and veteran arranger John Coleman, Crystal Telephone remains one of the singular records of the late '60s, a lush and funky word-jazz fantasia shrouded in cigarette smoke and drunk on language. Durham's crushed-velvet voice recalls John Cale's spoken word recitation of "The Gift" on the Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat, albeit couched in Coleman's cinematic, thickly rhythmic jazz-rock settings. His vividly perverse song-poems capture the romantic allure of fatalism (or is that the fatal allure of romance?), and his attempts at crooning, especially Crystal Telephone's transcendent title cut, are particularly effective. A masterpiece of decadence and indulgence. Jason Ankeny AMG

A cult treasure, though few picked up on it in its day and few have picked it up since. Not readily comparable to much other late-'60s psychedelia, it's rare that rock combines pretty, accessible melodies and off-the-wall eclecticism and experimentalism so well. Richie Unterberger AMG

Pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader Keith Tippett's first album, You Are Here...I Am There, was issued in 1969, and received some notice as the work of an ambitious composer looking for a voice. Apparently, by the time he recorded Dedicated to You, But You Weren't Listening, which was released in 1971, he'd found it in spades. Tippett has become one of the great lights of the British free jazz movement, and for more than 30 years he has led groups of improvising musicians, from two to 40 in number, on some of the most exploratory and revelatory harmonic adventures in musical history -- whether those in America know it or not. The band here is comprised of 11 pieces, including Elton Dean, Robert Wyatt, Nick Evans, Roy Babbington, Gary Boyle, Neville Whitehead, and others. The commitment to jazz here is total, as Tippett grafts the dynamic sensibilities of George Russell, the textural and chromatic palettes of Gil Evans, and the sheer force of Oliver Nelson onto his own palette. The interplay between soloists and ensembles is dazzling -- check "Thoughts for Geoff," with blazing solos by Nick Evans, cornetist Marc Charig, and Tippett himself in a series of angular arpeggios interspersed with chordal elocution. Wyatt's drumming, which opens the record with a bang on "This Is What Happens," is easily the most inspired of his career on record. The nod to Mingus on "Green and Orange Night Park" is more than formal; it's an engagement with some of the same melodic constructs Mingus was working out in New Tijuana Moods. In sum, this is an adventurous kind of jazz that still swings very hard despite its dissonance and regards a written chart as something more than a constraint to creative expression. Brilliant.
