Personnel: Lee Morgan (trumpet); Bennie Maupin (tenor saxophone); John Hicks (piano); George Benson (guitar); Reggie Workman (bass); Billy Higgins (drums).

Although he was past the glory days of THE SIDEWINDER or his membership in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers at this session, trumpeter Lee Morgan was perfectly capable of pulling out the stunning performances that had made him the golden boy of the hard-bop era. Morgan was only 30 when he recorded TARU for Blue Note in 1968.

Personnel: Lee Morgan (trumpet); Jackie McClean (alto saxophone); Bobby Timmons (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Art Blakey (drums).

LEEWAY presents Morgan in an all-star ensemble featuring the tart, swinging altoist Jackie McLean--a charter member of Blakey's earlier edition of the Jazz Messengers--and everyone's favorite bassist, Paul Chambers. Together with Jazz Messengers Blakey and Timmons, Chambers helps to rhythmically supercharge the soulful shuffles and blues which distinguish this upbeat blowing session. "These Are Soulful Days" is a funky hard bop anthem by Cal Massey, with a supple shift to 3/4 in the bridge. Morgan follows laid-back solos by Chambers, Timmons and McLean with an electrifying concoction of the rhythmic double time, vocal slurs and cascading melodic devices--each and every note sweetly articulated.

This is a collection that looks better on paper than in reality. Though Blakey is joined by Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons, Paul Chambers, and Jymie Merritt, the addition of drummers Philly Joe Jones, Roy Haynes, and conga player Ray Barretto makes this of interest mostly to percussion fans. While the music is fine, the overlong drum features can test the most durable jazz fan's ears, even with the obviously high level of musicianship.

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers: Art Blakey (drums); Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Lee Morgan (trumpet); Bobby Timmons (piano); Jymie Merritt (bass).
The title of the Jazz Messengers' THE FREEDOM RIDER was inspired by civil rights protestors of the '60s. The passion with which Blakey and his men play on this session is proof enough of the strong convictions at the heart of the struggles of the time. Indeed, the fire and emotion contained herein can be felt as well as heard. This session portrays the Messengers of the early '60s (before the departure of Lee Morgan and Bobby Timmons) in fine form.

This release is something of a departure for the bold trumpet stylist. After the Latin-tinged dance-floor jams of THE SIDEWINDER (released about six months prior to this disc), Morgan turns somewhat reflective. The music is quieter, with a good deal of structural space and restrained, almost expressionistic playing.

LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA VOL. 1 & 2 features instrumental pieces arranged by Zappa for an orchestra.

To the uninitiated, Frank Zappa was known primarily as an unpredictable, hard-to-categorize, twisted rock genius. But to his loyal legion of fans worldwide, he is much more. Not many realize that Zappa was a talented composer and arranger of symphonic music as well, as evidenced on such releases as 1979's ORCHESTRAL FAVORITES, and especially LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA VOL. 1 & 2.

Although it wasn't released until 1993, AHEAD OF THEIR TIME is a live Zappa/Mothers of Invention recording taped on October 28, 1968, at the Royal Festival Hall in London. It was the final date of a lengthy European tour, and Zappa was asked to pick an opening act to warm up this particular show. Throughout the tour, Frank had been composing chamber music pieces in his free time in hotels and airports. So instead of hiring a band to open the show, Frank decided to use this time to his advantage.

Included in Q's list of "The Best Jazz Albums of All Time."

Simple and direct and somewhat of a runt album in the history of jazz. The solo on Art Blakey's recording of Bobby Timmons' 'Moanin' is by Morgan, as is that on 'A Night In Tunisia'. By the time he came to record this album he had simplified his style, which appealed to the soul/jazz lovers of the 60s. To use the ultimate cliche, this is groovin' music; it rolls, it bops, it makes you feel good and its success is that it is refreshingly uncomplicated.

Ranked #3 in Mojo's "The 50 Most Out There Albums Of All Time" Often derided or misunderstood during the time of their original release, Miles Davis' numerous releases following BITCHES BREW are now recognized for their startlingly unconventional beauty. Drawing on rock and funk, Miles unflinchingly followed his muse into the subtle dynamics to be found in hypnotically relentless repetition overlaid with fiery soloing.

Ranked #90 in Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Albums Of The Eighties".

Sting's double-length follow-up to his solo debut DREAMS OF THE BLUE TURTLE is very much in the same sophisticated, adult pop vein, although darker and less jazzy (notwithstanding a collaboration with Miles Davis's arranger Gil Evans on a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing").
