The untimely death of Peter Schidlof on 15 August 2021 resulted not only in the loss of a great violist: it also marked the end of an era in which, for almost 40 years, the Amadeus Quartet was one of the leading chamber music ensembles in the world. Together in the same formation for a longer time than any other string quartet, the four Amadeus members - Norbert Brainin, Siegmund Nissel, Peter Schidlof and Martin Lovett - were close both as musical colleagues and as friends in private life; and this artistic "marriage", born out of a special fate which brought the Amadeus together after the War, could not survive the loss of one of its partners. They had always agreed that if any member could no longer play, for whatever reason, the Quartet would not continue; and the cellist Martin Lovett expressed what his colleagues clearly fell when he said, "Peter is simply irreplaceable". Indeed, it would be impossible for anyone to take his place without completely changing the sound and character of the ensemble. The quality of their playing was marked by a unique sonority and homogeneity, which derived from a common "schooling" with the great violinist and teacher Max Postal. It had a flexibility that could shape a phrase for its full expressive, emotional effect: yet the members of the quartet each projected very individual and contrasting musical personalities.

I have been listening to this set of the Beethoven quartets since the mid-70's. I never tire of these performances. I have over the years purchased other performances of the Beethoven quartets by the Emerson, Berg, Borodin, and Takacs but the QI's version is the one to which I return. There are no other performances that match the QI's for balance and crispness, detail and passion, And I have always admired Franco Rossi, the cellist, for his wonderful singing tone -- especially in the Op. 59 F maj. I can only agree with the other reviewers praise of the late quartets especially the Op. 132.

The idea of this opera came to Denisov in the beginning of the 1970s and he worked on it up until 1981. In the libretto, written in French, Denisov not only used text from the novel, and from numerous songs by Boris Vian, but also texts from a religious song by an anonymous author (14th tableau) from a funeral liturgy (13th tableau), and the Latin text from the mass (Credo and Gloria – 2nd tableau) and from the requiem (Agnus dei and Requiem aeternam – 13th tableau).

Only in last times the significance of Telemann in musical history was really recognized: his part is more than a participation in the only artistic field of the 18th century: Telemann, the unflinching avantgarde musician, he came from the same generation and landscape as Bach and Handel, tried in his own manner to participate in the determination of the decisive transitions within the stilistic phases which were always changing. He realises the connection between Bach's and Mozart's time; in his stilistical position he was variable and so "progressive" that even the "young" musical generation respected him as advisor and master. It is significant that even in pieces where he utilizes baroque forms, he combines them - like Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg (1718-1795) remarks on Telemanris Art of Fugues - with the so-called "gallant" style.

In his autobiography of 1718 Telemann had this admission to make about his work during the period 1708-1712, when he was Konzertmeister and Hofkapellmeister at Eisenach: "Variety always gives pleasure, and it is in this spirit that I have worked on my concertos. Of these I must confess that none came right from the heart, although I have produced a fair number of them ..." During these years he must have become acquainted with the new type of concerto introduced by Antonio Vivaldi which, with its alternation of ritornelli and soli, captivated the German composers.
Telemann must have been excited and stimulated by it but, unlike his younger colleagues, he remained all his life true to the influence of Corelli, Torelli, and Albinoni.

I've always particularly enjoyed the performance of the Trout by these performers. The phrases are nicely shaped and there is a real sense of dialogue with the piano. It's all very springy and dance-like; just how I like my Schubert! I find that I come back again and again to the Alban Berg; I think there's a lot of intelligence in their apparently unshowey readings.

I've been a fan of Telemann's Tafelmusik ever since I bought the Telefunken vinyl set featuring a young Frans Bruggen and a bunch of his friends in the pickup band Concerto Amsterdam, most of the members of which went on to major careers in music. That was over 30 years ago. After performing some of this music myself, and listening to it a great deal, my devotion to the music has only grown.

The Bruggen set is still competitive in many ways..but Goebel outdoes it in all the ways that count.

As AR said, reviewing the Philips recording of Telemann's St. Mark Passion last year, it's no use thinking of Bach all the time when listening to a Passion setting by Telemann. Of course, with a St. Matthew above all it's hard to avoid doing so. But Telemann's approach to the task of setting the Passion story (a task he undertook 46 times) was in many ways different from Bach's. He was very much a child of the Age of Enlightenment; not for him the mystical baroque depths of Bach, with his emotional chromatic harmonies, his complex contrapuntal weavings, his expressively suggestive colourings.
