Cowboy Junkies - Whites Off Earth Now!!
MFSL DSD Ultradisc UHR Hybrid CD/SACD UDSACD 4010
Eac wavpack | Eac Log + Cue | Complete HQ Scans | ~310 Mb | RS
2006/1986 | 43:16 min | 16-Page Booklet | Alternative Country

The Cowboy Junkies debut album reveals the band's innovative sense of interpretation, deep, dark ethereal soundscapes, and a brooding, hypnotic, laconic musical style uniquely their own. Featuring classic blues repertoire written by the legendary likes of John Lee Hooker and Robert Johnson, Whites Off Earth Now also features a raw, eerie version of Bruce Springsteen's "State Trooper". This evocative sonic alchemy succeeds due to Margo Timmins's languid, haunting vocals, Michael Timmins's sparse, yet soul piercing guitar, Alan Anton's evocative, gently loping bass, and Alan Aton and Peter Timmins's tastefully, understated percussion embellishments. The result is a profoundly mesmerizing and absolutely bone chilling listening experience. Los Lobos - Good Morning Aztlan
MFSL DSD Ultradisc UHR Hybrid CD/SACD UDSACD 2022
Eac wavpack | Eac Log + Cue | Complete HQ Scans | ~400 Mb | RS
2003/2002 | 47:45 min | Classic Rock

Los Lobos has been a great rock & roll band for over thirty years. Comprised of five world-class musicians who write, sing, and play brilliantly. Good Morning Aztlán is one of their strongest works to date. With its solid, straightforward sound, this album reflects the band's skills as one of rock's most consistently impressive acts. Good Morning Aztlán swings from high-octane rockers ("Done Gone Blue"), soulful R&B ("Hearts of Stone"), passionate Latin grooves ( "Luz de Mi Vida"), and any combination thereof, such as "Get to This," which blends an old-school funk bottom with crunching rock guitars. Mobile Fidelity has unearthed so much more detail on this SACD, all transferred from the original analog master tape. Mofi

Los Lobos - This Time
MFSL DSD Ultradisc UHR Hybrid CD/SACD UDSACD 2024
Eac wavpack | Eac Log + Cue | HQ Scans | ~250 Mb | RS
2004/1999 | 38:08 min | Classic Rock

Most bands who've soldiered on for as long as Los Lobos find that middle-age brings a laissez-faire bargain between fame and nostalgia that makes it all too easy to coast into the sunset comfortably seated on their laurels. What's so compelling about Lobos in the 1990s and beyond is their steadfast refusal to succumb to any such temptation. This Time marks the third chapter in their collaboration with producers Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake that yielded the outstanding and surprising Kiko and Colossal Head. It's easily their most adventuresome, category-confounding outing yet. This Time (like the 1999 Los Lobos spin-off projects Houndog and the Latin Playboys) is rife with an adventurous spirit that belies the lengthy recording history these guys have behind them. No one can accuse Los Lobos of slavishly trading on their "La Bamba" fame. --Steven Stolder

Paul Simon - You're The One
Warner Bros 2001 DVD-Audio ~ 24-bit 88.2kHz LPCM Stereo Only
Flac Files | No Log/Cue (DVD Rip) | Complete HQ Scans | ~ 890 Mb | RS
Original 2000 | 44:17 min | Classic Rock

The title says it all. You're The One is as understated as they come; this time out, Simon is a singer-songwriter, not a composer. As such, You're The One is more reminiscent of initial insular post-Simon & Garfunkel albums like There Goes Rhymin' Simon and Still Crazy After All These Years than the expansive Graceland. With no new lands to conquer, Simon has fashioned a collection whose appeal lies with its 11 crafty, catchy tunes, all of which are delivered with spirit and wit, particularly on the character-driven likes of "Pigs, Sheep and Wolves", "Darling Lorraine", and "Old". The lesson is that you don't need to make a Broadway production of life's little joys and heartaches; they fit quite nicely into a four-minute song. --Steven Stolder

The Byrds - The Notorious Byrd Brothers
MFSL DSD Ultradisc UHR Hybrid CD/SACD UDSACD 2015
Eac wavpack | Eac Log + Cue | HQ Scans | ~400 Mb | RS
Bonus Tracks | 12-Page Booklet
2006/1968 | 58:34 min | Classic Rock

The SACD version of " The Notorious Byrd Brothers" is the Holy Grail for anyone who has ever followed the group's rapid rise and collapse through the annals of rock history. With NBB the Byrds managed to put together the most creative, experimental, and cohesive group effort in their entire canon. Clearly this album came the closest to achieving McGuinn's vision for the Byrds. Where previous albums had a clear Byrds "sound", many of the individual cuts could be regarded as solo efforts. With NBB, they realized a new direction where a more cohesive sound began to emerge. While clearly "Byrds" sounding, the augmented studio effects and instrumentation took off to a level where individual contributions were submerged into something greater than the sum of the parts. The Notorious Byrd Brothers is truly the greatest Byrds effort ever and one of the greatest albums in Rock history almost 40 years after it was released. Musictap

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
Warner Bros. Records DVD-Audio ~ 24-bit 96kHz Advanced Resolution 5.1 & Stereo
ISO Clone | No Log/Cue (DVD Rip) | Complete HQ Scans | ~5.2 Gb | DVD-9 Layerbreak=1364112 | RS
Includes audio interview with Fleetwood Mac on the making of 'Rumours'
2001/1977 | 44:02 min | Photo Gallery | Classic Rock

Rumours’, the timeless 1977 Fleetwood Mac album has been the subject of countless documentaries, books and even formal studies. Not just because of the songs included but also because of the well-publicised trials and tribulations of the band, many of which came to a head during the 1976 recording sessions and whose emotions spilled into the music. Grammy® Album of the Year (1977), ‘Rumours’ is the sixth most successful recording of all time, selling more than thirty million copies and spending thirty weeks at the number one spot in the U.S. album charts. While students of the original stereo release may initially balk at the very thought of someone tinkering with such revered material, it will be some comfort to learn that many members of the original production team were called upon to oversee the 3/2.1 mix, rather than, shock-horror, some spotty-faced engineer who probably wasn’t born when the album first saw the light of day. Original production engineer Ken Caillat (now figurehead at 5.1 Entertainment) is back, ably assisted by Rich Fowler, James Stone and the legendary Bob Ludwig, who mastered both two- and multi-channel mixes available on the disc. That’s right, an independent 96kHz 24-bit two-channel mix is also available for those still having problems getting to grips with music out of any more than two loudspeakers.

Joni Mitchell - Blue
24 -96kHz 180-gram Rhino 2007 re-issue ~ Reprise 74842
Mastered from the original analog tapes by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman
FLAC | No Log/Cue (LP Rip) | Scans ~ 877 Mb | RS
Original release 1971 | 35:41 min | Folk Rock

The highest ranking by a female singer/songwriter on RollingStone 500 Greatest Albums of all Time is #30... and this is the album. Blue deserves every accolade hoisted upon it. Had this been Mitchell's only album (and hallelujah it isn’t), induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would have been assured. More importantly, through Blue, the emotions and honesty of Mitchell the singer, the writer and the musician are indelibly written on the soul of anyone who listens with an open heart. If you don’t have this album, or if you do but don’t get it, you desperately need to. Soundstage

Elvis Presley - That's The Way It Is
MFSL 24KT Gold Ultradisc II UDCD 560
Eac Flac | Eac Log + Cue | Complete HQ Scans | ~300 Mb | RS
1992/1970 | 46:19 min | Pop

THAT'S THE WAY IT IS captures Presley at the tail end of his transition from rock star to Vegas showman. Gone from Presley's repertoire are the spare rockers and tender love songs that highlight his earlier career. Replacing them are huge production numbers and dramatic ballads like "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" and "I've Lost You." In fact, the majority of the songs here are down tempo heartbreak songs, nearly all sung with a near-operatic level of intensity. In lesser hands the results would be mawkish, but Presley manages to pull it off. Especially effective are the opening and closing numbers, "I Just Can't Help Believin'" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water."

Sting - Brand New Day
A & M Records 2003 DVD-Audio Advanced Resolution 5.1 & Stereo
ISO Clone | No Log (DVD Rip) | Complete HQ scans | 3.6 Gb | Plays on all DVD players | RS
Original 1999 | Bonus Music Video | 48:49 min | Classic Rock

BRAND NEW DAY continues Sting's sophisticated approach toward pop music as he once again collaborates with ace musicians on material that knows no cultural or stylistic boundaries. Not surprisingly, the tantric guru chooses love as the theme for this eclectic collection of songs. Sting's cross-cultural forays range from a collaboration with Algerian singing sensation Cheb Mami on the Ofra Haza-meets-William Orbit "Desert Rose" to the bossa nova-influenced "Big Lie Small World." There's a jazz patina throughout--guest trumpeter Chris Botti emulates Miles Davis on the coffee-house hip-bop of "Perfect Love...Gone Wrong" and long-time friend Branford Marsalis adds mournful clarinet to the sumptuous string arrangements of the noirish "Tomorrow We'll See," a song about a weary prostitute straight out of a Raymond Chandler novel. Although the upbeat yet moody title track cheerfully rings with Stevie Wonder's bubbly harmonica, Sting's restlessness on "Fill Her Up" truly stands out. Outstanding surround sound!

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Exodus
MFSL 24KT Gold Ultradisc II UDCD 628
Eac Flac | Eac Log + Cue | HQ Scans | ~250 Mb | RS
1995/1977 | 37:24 min | Classic Rock

Recorded in London following an attempt on his life, Exodus shows Bob Marley mellowing a bit. Despite some powerful political tracks, Marley adopts a less fiery, more reflective approach than his previous outings. Still, it's hard to find reggae as good as this. Exodus has all one would expect from a Bob Marley album: rumbling statements like "Exodus" and "The Heathen" as well as poetic love songs like "Turn Your Lights Down Low." Considering how good these tracks are, Exodus does not stop here. Marley also unleashed the huge international hits "Jamming," "Waiting in Vain," and "One Love/People Get Ready." These inspired tracks, perhaps more than any others, came to define Marley around the world. AMG

Janis Joplin - Pearl
Sony/Columbia Mastersound SBM CK 64413
EAC Flac | Eac Log + Cue | Complete HQ scans | ~250 Mb | RS
1993/1971 | 34:10 min | Classic Rock

Janis Joplin's second masterpiece (after Cheap Thrills), Pearl was designed as a showcase for her powerhouse vocals, stripping down the arrangements that had often previously cluttered her music or threatened to drown her out. Thanks also to a more consistent set of songs, the results are magnificent -- given room to breathe, Joplin's trademark rasp conveys an aching, desperate passion on funked-up, bluesy rockers, ballads both dramatic and tender, and her signature song, the posthumous number one hit "Me and Bobby McGee".

Bonus Video | Plays on all DVD Players | DVD-9 Layerbreak = 1577872
ISO Clone | No Log (DVD-A Rip) | Complete HQ Scans | 4.7 Gb | RS + 5%
Original 2003| 42.25 min | Classic Rock

Like its predecessor, EVERYTHING harkens back to the classic '70s Dan jazzy pop sound, with some minor adjustments. The bluesy Walter Becker guitar leads that were a key element of TWO AGAINST NATURE are even more prevalent here (Becker even takes a lead vocal this time around), and the earlier album's harmonically simpler song structures and arrangements are pared down a bit further here. Other than that, it's blessedly business-as-usual for Becker and his accomplice Donald Fagen. When they're not looking askance at drug culture, the digital era, and the onset of old age, they're waxing satirical about sexual/social dynamics, and on the title track, providing the perfect, biting-but-poignant anthem for the post-9/11, post-Internet boom economic tumble. Guest appearances by jazz hotshots pianist Bill Charlap and saxman Chris Potter add melodic interest, but it's Becker and Fagen's gloriously twisted worldview that remains the fulcrum of the action. Grammy Award winning recording engineer, Elliot Scheiner, whose previous DVD-Audio mixing and engineering credits include R.E.M.’s ‘Reveal’ and Faith Hill’s ‘Cry’ (read HFR’s review), is responsible for the 5.1 mix on ‘Everything Must Go’.

Alice Cooper-Billion Dollar Babies
Rhino/WB 2001 DVD-Audio ~ 24-bit 96kHz LPCM Stereo Only
Flac Files | No Log/Cue (DVD Rip) | Complete HQ Scans | ~ 820 Mb | RS
Original 1973 | 40:51 min | 24-page booklet | Classic Rock

With Billion Dollar Babies, Alice Cooper refined the raw grit of their earlier work in favor of a slightly more polished sound (courtesy of super-producer Bob Ezrin), resulting in a mega-hit album that reached the top of the U.S. album charts. Song for song, Billion Dollar Babies is probably the original Alice Cooper group's finest and strongest. Not only is Billion Dollar Babies one of Cooper's very best; it remains one of rock's all-time, quintessential classics. AMG

Carly Simon - No Secrets
Rhino/Elektra DVD-Audio ~ 24-bit 192kHz LPCM Stereo Only
Remixed and Remastered for DVD-Audio 2002
Flac Files | No Log/Cue (DVD Rip) | Complete HQ Scans | ~ 1.7 Gb | RS
Original 1972 | 35:58 min | Classic Rock

Carly Simon's third album, 1972's NO SECRETS, was her best-selling release ever, thanks to the inclusion of the huge hit single "You're So Vain". Speculation persists over the identity of the person so deftly skewered in this song (Simon's been quoted as saying that while there are elements of various people in the lyrics, "there's nothing there that isn't true of Warren Beatty"), to such an extent that the excellence of the rest of the album is often overlooked. Besides the gospel-tinged hit "The Right Thing to Do", there's a moving tribute to the Carter Family (an early country music trio of the 1930s). "We Have No Secrets" is a confessional delight, and "Waited So Long" and James Taylor's "Night Owl" are two of the most rocking songs Simon ever recorded. Exquisitely produced and smartly sequenced, NO SECRETS has just the right balance of slick studio polish and soulful rough edges to make this a classic of '70s singer-songwriter pop. ~|~
