“I feel obliged to say something, as I believe this is one of the outstanding must-have CDs of recent years. Kyung Wha Chung cut these legendary recordings in the 70s (Bruch) and early 80s (Mendelssohn), with fantastic analogue sound and outstanding orchestral rapport. She plays the Mendelssohn with a pace which brings out the sheer joy and beauty of the music, free of lingering exaggerated sentimentality. If ever there was a modern masterpiece, this recording is one. The sound is sweet and virile, and in this as in so many of her recordings she plays as if she is capturing a live performance, not the stereotyped studio. There is a spontaneity so often lacking in studio recordings, which doesn't fade with repeated hearings.
The Bruch Concerto is also wonderfully fresh, a real breath of life in a much-recorded work. (Astonishingly, she plays this work even more beguilingly later with Klaus Tennstedt, coupled with the Beethoven, another must-have recording). I first heard this Kempe collaboration of the Bruch Concerto and Scottish Fantasy when it was released on vinyl, long ago played into scratched oblivion as was the way with my favourite LPs. “I was fully excited for this recording when it came, and it measures up. The sound quality is terrific, and Rabin is stunning. However, I only say okay because while it is obvious that this man was an incredible violinist, the performance is not clean. When there are repeats, he repeats yes, but takes the first repeat as though it were the second time, seriously tearing the phrasing of the piece. His string crossings are not clean, you can clearly hear open strings, and his fifths are often out of tune. Even more annoyingly on this CD is the fact that some of the caprices are sharp because the recording is old. The recording also lacks rhythmic integrity. For example, in caprice. For example, in the 10th Caprice, every single four-note, rolled chord is dragged out much longer than the value of an 8th, and then the martellato slurred sixteenths are played much too fast to compensate for this unwritten firmata over the chord. This causes a very uneven rhythm and literally steals the feeling of danse from this movement. Conversely, this CD is still a must have for many reasons. Many things that would be near impossible to other players, Rabin handles with technical ease. The presto slurred upbow staccato notes in caprice no. 21 are executed with perfection and surprisingly still maintain rhythmic integrity. Rabin's staccato bowing continues to amaze me like in No.5. That caprice is also perfect. It is a shame because i think he really put time into the ones like No.5 and No.21. If he had done that with the entire set of caprices, he probably would have done a much better job. Just another quick note: you won't find a better performance of the 24th anywhere....ANYWHERE. “The King of Kong is possibly the best movie I saw during 2007 (and I saw alot of movies). What makes it outstanding is that it's a simple story of good against evil played out between normal guys (maybe even less than normal when you factor in the Geek Quotient) and it's 100% true! I won't spoil things but any fan of wrestling, video games, or funny movies will appreciate the trials of Face-Hero cum everyman Steve Weibe as he tries to set the world record for Donkey Kong. In the process Weibe battles the very tight knit nerd “cult” of record holders who are not interested in seeing an outsider break through. And... I haven't even mentioned our Heel-Villain Billy Mitchell, possibly the cockiest man to ever smile on camera as he speaks about himself in the 3rd Person! 5 minutes into this movie you'll find yourself cheering for Weibe and hissing at Mitchell and you'll still have plenty of movie to entertain you. “I bought this CD without knowing any of the pieces (although after getting it I realized that I had heard Caprice 24 before!), so I'm saying this with no point of reference... This CD contains some breath taking music. From the first Caprice, Perlman shines in this incredibly difficult pieces. His technique and intonation sound pretty much flawless to me, and his sound is full and beautiful. My personal favorite Caprices are No. 1 (amazing bow work), No. 6 (double stops and tremolos galore – sounds like at least 3 violins at once!), No. 17 (quick and flawless octaves) and No. 24 (just plan amazing all around). Despite Perlman's virtuosity, these pieces are also beautiful music. I'm very impressed with Paginini's compositional skills. He manages to write music that is incredibly difficult, but never sacrifices the music in the process. You will be thrilled with CD.
