This is the second disc in the collection by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, and both are as good as each other. Judging by the average 4 stars for the previous disc, you can see why I'm giving this a 5 star! (In addition to this, while the war was not universally popular, these soldiers are only doing their job and I feel by buying this disc you can send them your support!)
Back to the review, this collection is different from any other which I have heard in the past. I can almost feel the emotion of the band during the recording! Very good collection.

Every Vivaldi CD from "Il Giardino Armonico" is a must! .Transcriptions of these concertos have been published in Vivaldi's opus 10, for transverse flute. Here, Il Giardino Armonico plays the original version of these concertos, which features recorder, oboe and bassoon parts. These early versions are, in my opinion, far superior in almost every point to the opus 10 concertos. Il Giardino Armonico's readings of Vivaldi are here more exhilirating than ever: the Red Priest's furious, energetic hand is certainly well served by such interpretations. The first two concertos, "The Storm at Sea" and "The Night" are of course the main attractions.

"...The members of the Saarbrücken Chamber Choir are persuasive advocates for this music. Their diction and ensemble are excellent, and their intonation generally very good....presentation is good, with some informative insert notes."

Bach, WFE - Colombus - Cantatas et Sinfonias

J.S. Bach's talent seems to flow in his grandson's blood at least as strongly as in any of his sons. Wilhelm Friedrich Ernst Bach's two symphonies (as well as the vocal works featured here) inhabit the sound-world of mid- to late Mozart, albeit without the brilliance (in every sense of the word). This Bach's wind writing is tasteful, and makes good use of the (then) newly-arrived clarinet. The Andante of the C major symphony is quite beautiful, with a dolefully sweet oboe solo throughout the movement. The period strings of Das Kleine Konzert are lively, clean, and in tune, although the violin soloist is not quite up to the rapid passage-work at the end of the G major symphony.

The glories of this final disc in the Hyperion Schubert Edition are hard to over-praise. Three tenors sing 20 songs from 1828, the last year of Schubert’s short life. The programme begins with Auf den Strom (On the River) sung by German/Canadian Michael Schade, with horn obbligato superbly played by David Pyatt. This is followed by Herbst, the two unrecorded Refrainlieder and a fragment, Lebensmut.

'Superb … Wonderfully fluent, confident singing from Finley, soft-grained intimacy from Banse … a delight' (Gramophone)

'Throughout the disc, Graham Johnson's accompaniments are typically illuminating with numerous touches of detail glossed over by many pianists. And, as ever, his vastly comprehensive notes, amounting to no less than a book, are in a class of their own.' (BBC Music Magazine)
'Even if you haven't been collecting this first-rate series of recordngs, the quality of the singing and the appealing variety of the programme provide a delightful encounter with Schubert's lyric genius' (bn.com)

Another fascinating Schubertiad, this time comprising songs from the period 1817 to 1821. As before, it contains some familiar masterpieces, some unknown masterpieces, rarities and fragments, many of them receiving their first recording. Particularly fetching are the ‘Singübungen’ – a wordless singing exercise for two sopranos, and ‘Über allen Zauber Liebe’ (‘Love above all magic’) which, of all the Schubert fragments, is the most alluring.

Theis volume of our Schubert edition has the subtitle ‘The Young Schubert’ and it contains music written between 1810 and 1814. There are several ‘first recordings’, including D1A, a 12-minute song called Lebenstraum which Schubert left unfinished and untitled, and also without any words! Inspired scholarship has recently revealed the poem which was in Schubert’s mind when he was writing it. He turned to the same poem again soon afterwards in D39, which is also on the disc.

'As ever, illuminating words complement revelatory music-making' (BBC Music Magazine)
'In performances as affectionate, dedicated and lovely as these, not a single item will fail to arouse interest, usually admiration too -- and in some cases sheer wonder. The recording maintains the high standards of this wonderful series' (Hi-Fi News)
'The variety of singers, the sheer enthusiasm and atmosphere and the extraordinary genius of Schubert bubble and touch the heart in these 23 tracks' (Musical Opinion)

This thirty-first issue in The Hyperion Schubert Edition presents a programme of Schubert’s religious music. While the composer’s own religious stance might best be described as ‘ambivalent’, he nonetheless turned to religious texts throughout his short life. Here we have the mighty ballads Hagars Klage (in which Hagar, concubine to Abraham, laments her exile in the desert) and Mirjams Siegegesang (which sees the prophetess Miriam rejoicing in the Israelite camp after Pharaoh and all his troops have been drowned in the Red Sea).
