Tokyo Story follows an aging couple, on their journey from their rural village to visit their two married children in bustling postwar Tokyo. Their reception, however, is disappointing: too busy to entertain them, their children send them off to the hot springs. After Tomi falls ill, she and Shukichi return home; the children, grief sicken, hasten to be with her. From a simple tale unfolds one of the greatest of all Japanese films. (-DVD cover)

An elderly couple journey to Tokyo to visit their children and are confronted by indifference, ingratitude and selfishness. When the parents are packed off to a resort by their impatient children, the film deepens into an unbearably moving meditation on mortality (http://imdb.com/title/tt0046438/plotsummary)

The story seems so simple, an elderly couple leaves the country to visit their children who have moved away to Tokyo. Country folk meet city folk, age meets youth, life meets death. There are no big blow-ups, no crisis points reached or contrived dramas, just life flowing along as it does. (www.amazon.com)

In Ozu's gentle hands, the entire story is told between the lines, with perhaps not a single sentence of direct dialog spoken in the film. Under the calm surface is an ocean of depth, emotions flowing with an unstoppable power, yet never able to breach the veneer of etiquette and politeness. (www.amazon.com)

As Ozu perfected his own style, he did away with camera movement and placed it at a very low level, as if the viewer were sitting crosslegged. This is very evident in "Tokyo Story," a sad, simple story of generational conflict where an elderly couple's visit to their busy, self-absorbed children in Tokyo is met with indifference. You have to pay close attention, however, because the story's events are filled with "ellipses." For example, one couple, too preoccupied with their own affairs to give the elderly pair much attention, discusses sending their parents on a holiday and the next shot shows them on the holiday at the spas. (www.amazon.com)

A more significant illustration is the sudden illness of the mother which we only hear about secondhand. These ellisions or ommissions in story passages actually dictate the film's pace as Ozu examines the gradual fracturing of the Japanese family. You sense this "elliding" as the story unfolds without much of a plot. This is a classic movie which will continue to endure. (www.amazon.com)

the best part about the rip - the way i look at it as a novice in film-appreciation - is the "2nd Audio Track: English commentary"...
it is full of so much... *wisdom*, may i call it... that it defies any explanation...

thanks.

First time I saw this, I thought it was boring. Since then I have seen several more Ozu films, and now I GET it! I'm delighted to be able to download this class version with dual audio so I can watch it again and enjoy the commentary.
Thanks man!
