The story of this film based on two autobiographical short stories by Tibor Déry, one of the leaders of the 1956 Hungarian revolution, takes place during the purges of the dictatorial Rákosi regime in 1953. Great Hungarian actress Mari Töröcsik plays the character of a young woman whose husband, János, has been brutally and groundlessly arrested and who tries to protect her dying mother-in-law from the terrible truth: János will probably never come back. She makes up a glorious image of the son, who became a successful film director in America, by forging letters filled with wonderful news and by resorting to all possible means to hide her terrible sadness. Luca regularly visits her bedridden mother-in-law. Luca's husband, János, has been arrested on a trumped up political charge, and Luca does not know if he is still alive. Luca hides this from his mother by making up letters purporting to be from János who is directing a big film in New York. Luca discovers that János is alive, and is dismissed from her teaching job because of her husband. The dying mother anxiously awaits the return of her son from New York. This movie artfully presents a strong psychological portrait of an aging Hungarian woman and her daughter in law. The sense of realism is very strong, in spite of a rather unconventional technique of focusing on objects or cutting to memories...in fact, these occasional jerky cuts enhance the realism of the characters. It is slow paced, but very believable, and I found it to be extremely compelling to watch. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0067814/usercomments)

“Unquestionably a masterpiece of Hungarian cinema, Károly Makk’s Love is a wonderful film directed with a spiritual precision that succeeds in registering true love” – P. Gilliat, The New Yorker. .

Grand Prix at the 1971 Cannes Festival.
