After a decade of battling in the Crusades, a knight challenges Death to a fateful game of chess. More than forty years after its initial release, Ingmar Bergman’s stunning allegory of man’s apocalyptic search for meaning remains a textbook on the art of filmmaking and an essential building block in any collection. criterion.com
A man seeks answers about life, death, and the existence of God as he plays chess against the Grim Reaper during the Black Plague. (amazon.com - plot outline)
A Knight and his squire are home from the crusades. Black Death is sweeping their country. As they approach home, Death appears to the knight and tells him it is his time. The knight challenges Death to a chess game for his life. The Knight and Death play as the cultural turmoil envelopes the people around them as they try, in different ways, to deal with the upheaval the plague has caused. Ingmar Bergman's 1956 film has been parodied by everyone from Woody Allen to Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, but it remains one of the strangest and richest classics of world cinema. Max Von Sydow plays a knight returning from the Crusades to encounter an apocalyptic scenario inspired by the Book of Genesis. (amazon.com --Tom Keogh)
He plays chess with Death (Bengt Ekerot), sees a manacled witch, watches a band of flagellants go by--all of it foretelling an inevitable end to life. Unabashedly allegorical and lyrical and existing in a world unto itself, the film is enormously mesmerizing no matter what one thinks of the weighty meanings Bergman has attached to it all. (amazon.com --Tom Keogh)
Ingmar Bergman's THE SEVENTH SEAL is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest films ever made, which may scare away some viewers. The film is also a meditation on death and religion, which may also make some people hesitant to watch it. (amazon.com)
The movie is laden with symbolism, often of a religious nature, and filmed in stark black and white. Although the movie is serious and cerebral in tone, there is also a surprising element of humor and lightness. If you approach this film with an open mind, you will probably end up enjoying it, although it isn't for all audiences. Highly recommended for discerning film fans. (amazon.com)

All of my movie posts

Fa.
Thanks for another masterpiece, a must see for any serious film lovers.
"one of the greatest films ever made, which may scare away some viewers. The film is also a meditation on death and religion, which may also make some people hesitant to watch it."
I agree with this statement. Some people are scared of death, existence or non-existence of God, and therefore scared of watching films about these matters. But, as human beings, we are all same in essence, we are all born and we'll all die, and that's natural. Logically, only that which is not born cannot die. Zen Master Bankei had enlightenment expirience when he heard the word "unborn". Tarkovsky said he was immortal. What did Bankei see and was Tarkovsky's soul talking when he said that?
There may not be definitive answers in our Relative World, but watching films like this one can only bring us closer to the Absolute, to the Truth.
Bergman is an atheist
yannos, I know that "kharmok" have the DVD of Makavejev's "Sweet Movie"... lets ask him to to rip and publish it on Avax-pages :)
(btw: if he doesnt have time to do that... I will gladly do it for you :))
yannos,
sorry, I meant to reply to you, that I've got "Sweet movie" but got carried away with other things...
FNB.47,
I planned to post "Sweet movie" and some other Makavejev films, but to be realistic, that won't be possible for me for months... therefore you are most welcome to post it yourself, and I'll be glad if you do. Same with "Proces de Jeanne d Arc", you're welcome to post it if you wish...me I still haven't seen it...
war & peace movie based on leo tolstoy's novel. Its the costliest movie ever made.
I have ''Proces de JOA'' on DVD,if FNB doesn't have time to do(because some Bresson films are better than this) I will rip and up.
harrygee, "Jungfrukällan" is already placed in my upload-queue... it will be posted here, in a week or two...
Hello Mr.bill_gates,
I have Sergei Bondarchuk's "Voyna i mir"... 5 DVD box-set... and almost 8 hours long.
I will rip and post it in the future (that is... in 2-3 months I mean... :))
