Few people have made as big an impact on Korean cinema as Lee Chang Dong in the last ten years. A former novelist and scriptwriter of masterpieces like To the Starry Island, Lee made his debut in 1997 with Green Fish, one of the best Korean gangster films of the last twenty years. Critical acclaim and countless festival invitations were only the beginning of a pluri-decorated career, which continued to shine with his 1999 film Peppermint Candy, putting the spotlight on amazing actors like Moon So Ri and Sol Kyung Gu. Finally, Oasis was not only important for Lee himself, but for Korean cinema as a whole, as Moon So Ri's unforgettable performance in the film brought her a prize at the Venice Film Festival, along with one for director Lee. After serving as Minister of Culture, Lee is returning to filmmaking with his fourth film, Secret Sunshine, starring Song Kang Ho and Jeon Do Yeon. This is the perfect opportunity to revisit the three films that made him a legend with the Lee Chang Dong Collection boxset.

The Lee Chang Dong Collection includes:

Green Fish (1997) - 111 min.

After completing his military service, Mak Dong (Han Suk Kyu, Forbidden Quest) finds himself working for local gangster Bae Tae Gon (Moon Sung Keun, Hanbando), introduced by singer Mi Ae (Shim Hye Jin, Hello, Francesca). First surprised by how much his hometown has changed, in a period when Korean urbanization was at its most extreme, Mak Dong slowly gets used to his life as a gangster until the grim reality of the business hits him, and he realizes it's a road with no return. The release includes making of (45m)and production meeting footage.

Peppermint Candy (1999) - 130 min.

1999, Kim Young Ho (Sol Kyung Gu, Silmido) walks in the middle of the railroad tracks, planning to end it all. From there begins a gradual look back at all the reasons which led him to this tragic decision, a process that revisits some of the biggest and most painful events of Korea's last twenty years. From the Gwangju Massacre to the IMF Crisis, the film masterfully intertwines Young Ho's struggles with the troubled history of Korea, one of the reasons why this film is considered by many to be one of the finest the country ever produced. The release includes making of (48 minutes), Karlovy Vary Film Festival featurette, audition featurette, outtakes, theatrical trailer, and TV spot.

Oasis (2002) - 133 min.

He's a former convict, she has cerebral palsy. Two outcasts at an isolated desert oasis. Hong Jong Du (Sol Kyung Gu) just got out of prison for a hit and run accident, and when he tries to contact the family of the victim, he meets Han Kong Ju (Moon So Ri, Legend), the daughter of the man he apparently killed. At first the two feel uncomfortable, but Kong Ju finds quickly he's the only one who truly respects her, despite the warnings from her family. But can they continue to meet with their families interfering all the time? The release includes making of (33 minutes), Oasis in Venice featurette, press screening, and theatrical trailer.

thanks again. Here it is really difficult to get Korean films
Posted By: Girhomer Date: 26 Sep 2009 03:46:20
Looks interesting. I've only recently gotten into korean films. My favorite so far (by far) is Memories of Murder. Damn near a masterpiece. Next I was looking into Wong Kar Wai, Ji-woon Kim, and Chan-wook Park (Although I've already seen Oldboy). Would love to hear some comments about these guys if you've seen any of their movies. Anyway, this guy looks interesting and I'll give it a try.

This is my first post here; Cereal Ripper, I just want to say that your uploads are amazing and thank you.

Love Lee Chang Dong and these movies, especially Peppermint Candy and I concur with everyone about Memories of Murder (which is still my favorite Korean film, even wrote my thesis on it).

Although I own these, I'm very happy to see less common Korean films becoming available online, a few of those Im Kwon Taeks you posted earlier will nicely fill out my collection, by the way do you have the new edition of The Housemaid? That would be a coup and if I dare make another request, any plans for The Rules of the Game? Haven't been able to find that anywhere.

Once again thank you!

Thank you CR! What a collection! What generosity!

Already own the films. And I think Pepermint Candy is the better film (with its no-linear narrative).

Thanks for the scans, CR.

@Girhomer

I would suggest two Korean directors name (to add to your list): For one, Kim ki duk has been producing films with variety of style and theme. Some are good and the rest are not. His films are easy to experience. Second, I think Hong Sang-Soo is the greatest filmmaker ever from the land of Korea (with Im Kwon taek in close second). His film is like Tsai Ming Liang, Bresson and Tarkovsky roll into one. Go and try out Turning Gate (2002) & The Power of Kangwon Province (1998) and you will see my meaning. A caution: Be patient with his films and you will be rewarded.

Regards.

@ herbie nichols
I was actually just looking up that movie yesterday. Heard good things and will probably watch it soon.

@lauryyk
A friend of mine told me that I have to watch Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring and my local movie rental place has a copy of 3-iron so I'll definately check those out. As for the other two directors, I've never heard of them so I'll try Turning Gate and The Power of Kangwon Province based on your recomendation.

@ Everyone else
If you like Korean movies or are remotely interested in them, check out Memories of Murder. Truly fantastic Cops-trail-serial-killer movie but with clever twists and turns and some scenes that will stick with you for a very long time. I also recently saw a movie called TaeGukGi. A little melodramatic and cheesy in parts but still an emotional thrill ride about two brothers caught in a war. It's worth a look.

@lauryyk and Girhomer

Just want to say that lauryyk above was the one who posted some recommendations for you. I don't actually disagree from him, i am a true fan of Hong Sang Soo, for its clever and highly tangible psychological description of its characters. I would recommended "The Day The Pig Fell Into The Well". I'll post it here sooner or later anyway,

About Kim Ki Duk, i like some of his films, like 3-iron and Samaritan Girl, but Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... is probably his worst movie. I don't know if you guys know, but the director of Memories of Murder is the same director of The Host, quite a blockbuster, now relatively famous in the west.

@conranp

Rules of the Game is in my queue, but i hope a better and new edition will be announced before i post it.
Posted By: Girhomer Date: 27 Sep 2009 05:02:13
@CR
There we go. I fixed it to read lauryyk. I must have misread. Anyway, I'm surprised by your views on Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... beacuse like I said, I've heard it's his best. As far as The Host is concerned, I have to say meh. The first half hour or so was great (Dumping the waste and the attack) plus the end with the Agent Orange and the political message was cool but the middle portion dragged severely. There were countless scenes of the family walking through various sewers. I don't know, maybe my expectations were too high following Barking Dogs Don't Bite(8/10) and Memories of Murder(9.5/10) but I just found myself a little disappointed, but still an interesting movie (7/10). Out of curiosity, have you seen Memories Of Murder? I'd love to hear your views.

@Anyone who can help
Does anyone know where I can get a good copy of Madeo. I hear it's really great but I don't think it's out on dvd yet. Also, does anyone know when Park's Thirst is coming out. Looking for both of those. Thanks for any help.
Posted By: CerealRipper Date: 27 Sep 2009 05:53:38
I am not a big fan of The Host as well, but taking into consideration it is a monster movie, it is alright. I believe Memories of Murder to be his best as well, you may want to watch Voices of a Murderer (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0969268/), kinda similar, the leading role is played by the same actor in Oasis here. I like Donna Bae very much and enjoyed Barking Dogs Never Bite, but wouldn't give it a very high praise, still very much worth watching.

Best,
CR
