Roma, secondo dopoguerra: Antonio Ricci (Lamberto Maggiorani), un disoccupato, trova lavoro come attacchino comunale. Per lavorare, però, deve possedere una bicicletta e la sua è impegnata al Monte di pietà, per cui la moglie, Maria deve impegnare le lenzuola per riscattarla. Sfortunatamente, proprio il primo giorno di lavoro, la bicicletta gli viene rubata mentre incolla un manifesto cinematografico. Antonio rincorre il ladro, ma inutilmente. Andato a denunciare il furto alla polizia, comprende che le forze dell'ordine non potranno aiutarlo nel ritrovare la bicicletta. Tornato a casa disperato e amareggiato, coinvolge nella ricerca un suo compagno di partito che mobiliterà i suoi colleghi netturbini che all'alba, insieme a lui ed a suo figlio Bruno, che pure così piccolo lavora ad un distributore di benzina, andranno a cercarla a Piazza Vittorio prima e a Porta Portese poi, dove tradizionalmente allora, e dicono anche oggi, andavano a finire le cose rubate.

Antonio Ricci, quarante ans vit dans une banlieue populaire de Rome avec sa femme et ses deux enfants. Au chômage depuis deux ans, il a finalement la chance de trouver un emploi de colleur d’affiche, à condition qu’il ait une bicyclette. La sienne étant gagée au Mont de Piété, Maria, sa femme y porte trois paires de draps afin de récupérer l’indispensable bécane. Le lendemain matin, il se rend à son travail, accompagné de Bruno, son fils de 10 ans, qui travaille dans une station service. Ce même matin, alors qu’il a commencé sa tournée, sa bicyclette lui est volée, anéantissant d’un coup tous ses espoirs. Vainement, il se lance à la poursuite du voleur dans les rues de Rome, il doit se résoudre à porter plainte auprès de la police, qui lui laisse peu d’espoirs. Le lendemain dimanche, avec son fils, son ami Baiocco et deux autres compères, ils vont au marché aux puces où ils pensent retrouver le voleur désirant vendre le vélo. Après d’infructueuses recherches, il l’aperçoit en pleine discussion avec un mendiant. Le garçon s’enfuit et le vieux mendiant ne veut rien dire, Ricci le harcèle jusque dans l’église pendant un office destiné aux pauvres. Plus tard, le hasard lui fait retrouver son voleur qui se réfugie dans un bordel. Expulsés par les femmes, les hommes du quartier se liguent contre Ricci qui doit s’en aller. La perte de sa bicyclette signifiant la perte de son emploi, il se résout à en voler une, mais il est rattrapé par des passants. Brutalisé, il est emmené vers le poste de police, mais finalement le propriétaire décide de ne pas porter plainte, Ricci peut rentrer, honteux.

The film tells the story of Antonio Ricci, an unemployed man in the depressed post-World War II economy of Italy. With no money and a wife and two children to support, he is desperate for work. He is delighted to at last get a good job hanging up posters, but on the sole condition that he has a bicycle which must be used for work. He is told unequivocally: "No bicycle, no job." His wife Maria pawns their bedsheets in order to get money to redeem his bicycle from the pawnbroker. Early on in the film, Ricci's coveted bicycle is stolen by a bold young thief who snatches it when he is hanging up a poster.

Composed of alternating sequences of daytime and nighttime episodes (that would be similarly used by Federico Fellini in his subsequent film, LA DOLCE VITA), the film presents a recurring visual dichotomy that illustrates the polarizing division between wealth and poverty, spirituality and materialism, vanity and humility, selfishness and benevolence.

After nine years of International Community’s presence in Kosovo the situation does not at all look bright. Riccado Iacona, a RAI TRE journalist, interviews both Serbs and Albanians about the crimes of the KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army).
Rai Tre is previewing the Prix Italy 2008, the first episode entitled "Kosovo nine years later."
Riccardo Iacona in details show the terrible ethnic cleansing commited by the Albanians. Since 1999, when NATO occupied Kosovo, and together with the UN took control of Kosovo, 250,000 Serbs were expelled from Kosovo only for reasons of ethnic hatred, just because they are Serbs.

While trying to understand the situation in Kosovo Riccardo Iacona from RAI TRE discovers that Kosovo Mafia is organizing drug trafficking inside Europe. Following the drug paths he Arrives to Afghanistan where links between drug trafficking and terrorism become even more obvious.
