Set in the last days of the doomed quest for the Holy Grail, this is a tale of the end of the age of chivalry and the death of a dream. Riding through dark, treacherous forests, King Arthur's knights return to Camelot, their ranks decimated, their morale gone. Lancelot in particular feels responsible for their failure, sure that his adulterous love for Queen Guinevere has ruined their mission. Discouragement hangs over everything, staining the bright pageantry of the court with the twilight tones of a dying age. Shot with the astonishing, austere beauty that marks all of his work, this powerful chronicle of the end of the Round Table ranks with Bresson's finest achievements.
A million miles away from 'Camelot' or 'Excalibur', this film ruthlessly strips the Arthurian legend down to its barest essentials. Arthur's knights, far from being heroic, are conniving and greedy men who, just before the film starts, have failed miserably to find the Holy Grail. Aimlessly resentful at first, the developing relationship between Lancelot and Queen Guinevere focuses their rage, leading to inevitable tragedy... (http://imdb.com/title/tt0071737/plotsummary)
It is shown in the most raw way possible, without any kind of beauty or visual show to please the audience. That's the essence of Bresson's cinema: "only the necessary", said the master. Then, after the credits, we see that is not the Holy Grail story, the traditional story, but what happens next, it begins were the legend ends. The knights return demoralized to the kingdom. Their leader, Percival, is lost, and Lancelot blames himself and his adultery with Guinevere as the reason that the Grail was not found- the search for it was, for him, also the search for God. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0071737/usercomments)
The Queen is not convinced, and ask his love with words which have nothing extraordinary alone; however, the emotionless way she asks makes it unusual, and somewhat disturbing. The knights are completely demystified and shown not as legend, but men, and men which lack something: is it love, God, a reason to live now that their search is over (and was unsuccessful)? Maybe all that, maybe more, but the fact is that eventually it will explode, and Camelot's decadence will be inevitable. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0071737/usercomments)
Bresson's ultra-naturalistic and anti-conventional style makes it's images very powerful. The best are a tournament when he applies one of his principles "to give something for the ears and then for the eyes, never both", increasing the effect of the combats, which would have seem even foolish otherwise, and the ending, which is a very shocking one. Because of all that, Lancelot of the Lake is one of the finest films of one of cinema's greatest masters. Mainstream audiences will probably hate it, but one who's eager to see another side of a very known story should see it. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0071737/usercomments)

FNB,do you have Raoul Ruiz''On Top of the Whale ''? Like very strange film
Some one knows why there are not any images any more?
maharaja, unfortunately RS says:
"This server has a broken drive, which will be replaced as soon as possible. No data is lost. Unfortunately downloads from this server are not possible right now. We hope to continue with normal operation within the next 24 hours."
That means there is a problem with RS-hardware at the moment and they will repair it in 24 hours. Bad luck unfortunately.
suki2000,
which images?... do you mean Lancelot-screenshots in this page for example... if so, there are no problem... I see screenshots OK...
nazgul, I personally am on the side of Bresson admirers :)
He was one of the greatest masters like Tarkoskiy and Antonioni. All of his works are examples of pure-cinema. His style... the way he tells his story... are sooo unique. He always makes you get the biggest slice in just one cut. "Balthazar" for example... I've seen it probably hundred(s) of time in 30 years... and it still makes me feel amazed when I watch it as if the first time...
Raoul Ruiz is OK... but not amongst my "very-favorites"... ie, I havent archived any of his work... so I dont have "On Top of the Whale" too (and I've never seen it).
Tarkovsky is good but for me,i think Theo Angelopoulos is even better.Compare with Tarkovsky's best for me:1-Zerkalo
2-Stalker
3-Offret
4-Solaris
with Angelopoulos's best:1-Travelling Players
2-Landscape In the Mist
3-Eternity and A day
4-Ulysse's Gaze
Tarkovsky often makes films with good scripts.Tarkovsky's films always have a lot of dialogue, but i prefer ''silence''.
I'm uploading some Theo right now :)
For me top directors is:
Bergman(I think he is best:),Bresson(I like only 4 or 5 of his,Mouchette is his best),Antonioni(I'm a fan of his, too),Angelopoulos(I think Angelopoulos's film like Tarkovsky, take the beautiful of nature, and get the viewers to memory,space,...),Tarkovsky,...
But how old are you man?Must be 60 years old??
nazgul, my Tarkovskiy-movies-preferential-order goes like this:
- "Zerkalo" and "Nostalghia" equally shares the first place
- "Stalker" and "Solyaris" equally shares the second place
- "Andrey Rublyov"
- "Ivanovo"
- "Offret"
- "Steamroller"
- 2 student films: "Ubiitsy" and "Segodnya..."
about Angelopoulos... well he is a great man, great personality... He knows everything, what is wrong and what is right. He ia also a great film critic and a film scholar.
but
it seems to me that he lacks to put his talent in his movies fully/exactly/completely...
it seems to me that there are always something missing in his movies. And there are many irrelevant/unnecessary scenes/parts in his movies (ie, some harsh sex-scenes)... and also very poor background-acting, I mean for example when 2 main actors are talking in a scene, some secondary crowd in the background cant make it at all...
I've seen all of his movies over the years except:
- Anaparastasi (1970)
- Meres Tou 36 (1972)
- Megaleksandros (1980)
If you have them... (especially if you have "Megaleksandros (1980)") please post them.
When someone says "Angelopoulos"... the first thing comes to my mind is "bicycle riding men in yellow raincoats, while it was raining"... such a beautiful image... very beautiful...
I've seen couple of times his major work and I only want to watch "Eternity and a Day" in the future once more.. not the others I think.
