Man was made to be happy for simple reasons and unhappy for even simpler ones – just as he is born for simple reasons and dies for even simpler ones... Isa and Bahar are two lonely figures dragged through the ever-changing climate of their inner selves in pursuit of a happiness that no longer belongs to them. Iklimler/Story

A dowdy university instructor Isa (Nuri Bilge Ceylan) is an inattentive husband to his younger, TV-business wife Bahar (Ebru Ceylan). Self-absorbed and selfish, Isa only communicates in the most rudimentary way, while she, similarly, detaches into crying jags and juvenile behavior. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0498097/)

Ceylan's previous feature, Distant, won the Grand Prix at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival; its glowing reception cemented his status as a major contemporary auteur. In Climates, Ceylan takes us to stunning locations all across Turkey in what may be his most personal film to date - in addition to directing and starring, he also wrote and edited. Filmed with his signature contemplative style, it is a highly subdued, deliberately-paced work that conveys more through silence than through exposition. The cinematography by Gökhan Tiryaki achieves a new high for high-definition video with its refined, poetic images, while Ceylan's precise, beautiful compositions give the film a characteristically elegiac tone. This achingly poignant film subtly captures the emotional tremors that ripple through a fallow relationship. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0498097/usercomments)

"...the work of a film-maker who has established absolute mastery over his cinematic idiom; it does not trade in miserablism, but a kind of degree-zero clarity about the potential for alienation and anguish in our secular faith in romantic partnership. This is the dark side of love, and it is examined with fierce, cold brilliance..." Guardian

"As an actor, Ceylan has a lugubrious onscreen charm, but as a director he’s not interested in portraying himself in a flattering light... Minutely observed, painfully honest and acutely perceptive, this is a mournful masterpiece..." Times

"...It is absolutely riveting and painfully honest. This movie is art house angst in its purest form, but I cannot imagine anyone, anywhere over the age of 30 failing to find Climates deeply affecting." Observer

Sight & Sound : Top Ten movies of 2006
For their January 2007 issue, British Film Institute's internationally acclaimed publication Sight & Sound magazine asked their regular reviewers to choose five films they were impressed by in 2006. Whether these were the best, their favourite or the most culturally significant was left up to the writers. As the result of this poll, "Climates" by Nuri Bilge Ceylan was selected in the top ten list of all films for the year of 2006.
