1980. Au cours d'une mission de routine dans le Pacifique, le porte-avions nucléaire USS Nimitz est pris dans une tempête électromagnétique. Peu après, le bâtiment capte sur la radio des émissions datant de 1941, parmi lesquelles des informations concernant la progression de l'armée allemande en URSS. À bord, personne ne parvient à expliquer ce qui se passe. Par ailleurs, les photos ramenées par les avions de reconnaissance montrent le port de Pearl Harbor intact. Dans le même temps, deux avions de chasse abattent deux chasseurs japonais "zéro", après que ces derniers ont attaqué un yacht à bord duquel se trouvaient un sénateur américain et sa secrétaire......

(In 1980, the supercarrier USS Nimitz takes on a civilian observer, Warren Lasky (Martin Sheen), at the orders of his reclusive and mysterious employer, Mr. Tideman (who helped design much of the ship), just before it departs Pearl Harbor for a training mission in the Pacific Ocean. Out in the Pacific, the ship encounters a strange storm-like vortex which disappears after the ship passes through it...)
