Hong Kong action superstar Maggie Cheung plays herself in Olivier Assayas' brilliant satire of the movie industry. A film about a fictional remake of a classic silent film with a real-life Hong Kong actress playing herself, Olivier Assayas’s Irma Vep can appear to be a very intimidating film in terms of its layers of complexity, references and post-modern treatment. But because of those various layers and a very relaxed, unpretentious approach, it correspondingly has many levels of accessibility, not least of which for many viewers, it has to be said, is the sight of Maggie Cheung running around for most of the film in a tight-fitting bondage outfit. DVD Times

Rene Vidal, a director in decline, decides to remake Louis Feuillade's silent serial "Les Vampires." Believing no French actress can match Musidora as Irma Vep (an anagram for vampire), he casts Hong Kong action heroine Maggie Cheung, though she speaks no French. On the chaotic set, she's aided by Zoe, the wardrobe mistress with a crush on her; she defends Vidal to a Parisian journalist who trashes all French film and praises John Woo and Schwarzenegger; she befriends Vidal when he goes over the edge; and, in costume, she breaks into a hotel suite to steal jewels as her victim talks on the phone. We also watch the making, the rushes, and the remains of Vidal's unfinished film. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0116650/plotsummary)

In the tradition of films about filmmaking, Irma Vep takes its own special place among such films as Fellini's 8½. A has-been director decides to remake the silent French serial film Les Vampires starring a Hong Kong action film superstar....

The production is falling behind schedule and its star, Maggie Cheung (who plays herself), finds herself an outsider with the film's crew save for a woman costumer (Nathalie Richard) who has a crush on her. Rene the director (Jean-Pierre Leaud) cast Maggie after viewing one of her many martial-arts fantasy films....

Although he finds her perfect for the part of the jewel thief in Les Vampires, the rest of the crew cannot see the reasons for casting Maggie beyond her beauty and how she looks in her tight-fitting latex costume. Rene's vision is soon lost on everyone and he suffers a mental breakdown....

The film is reassigned to Jose (Lou Castel), a seemingly more commanding director (although he takes the job because his welfare is about to run out), whose first decision is to fire Maggie. Irma Vep is presented as a comedy, but at its heart lies an examination of the art and craft of filmmaking. In a clever turn, Maggie creeps around her hotel getting into character, in essence remaking Irma Vep for real-life director Olivier Assayas. Assayas wrote the film in 10 days and shot the film in a month after meeting Maggie Cheung at a film festival--a fascinating case of life imitating art... or is it the other way around? never heard of him but looks very interesting...the fact that you posted it makes it automatically a download straight away without delay, and another addition to the long but phenomenal watching queue :-)

merci beaucoup!

p.s. interesting letter-play on your last 2 snapshots! I saw the same thing in Serbian film "Tri Karte za Holivud", which makes a great fun of the communists.

Maybe I should see the movie again.
For some reason it gets high ratings.
I like a lot Maggie Cheung and I got the DVD years ago but I had a hard time going though the whole movie.
There's got to be something wrong with me :)

roocoon,

:)) nothing wrong with you... I agree with you :)
I had seen "Irma Vep" in a film festival about 10 years ago and last night I watched it for the 2nd time while making above screenshots. "Irma Vep" was my first Assayas movie. During last 10 years I have also watches his "Les Destinées sentimentales (2000)", "Demonlover (2002)", "Clean (2004)". I think "Irma Vep" is the best one among these 4 movies. Some of them are interesting but I never expect much-deep-things from an Assayas movie. Me too, a great admirer of Maggie Cheung :)) and rest of the cast (J-P.Léaud, Nathalie Richard, Bulle Ogier, Lou Castel) play very well.

Good. I had me worrying for a minute :)

Talking of Maggie Cheung, I have a couple of old DVDs I got from Hong-Kong.
Heroic Trio (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105619/)
Heroic Trio 2: Executioners (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108606/)

Besides Maggie, there's a great double bonus (in both films) in the persons of Anita Mui and Michelle Yeoh.

Problem is, I only have a 512K upload speed on a line that drops more often than I'd like.
If somebody wants to let a download manager grab the movies and then upload them to RS for other people to get, I can set them up under an account on mmy FTP server.
Full movie or rip. Let me know which format, if you're interested.
email is my nick at hotmail.com.

Dear FNB47
i hope you dont mind some criticism a-la literary and cinematic norm, cahiers & democracy in general but i saw this when it came out and it was crap then and its crap now. will you please forget these hartlyesque junk and chinese cinema and even Bergman and for crying out loud , stick the missing Paradjanovs on. rare Ozus too as the standard is out there. some Jean Rouch and "Hapiness" (russian not the usual crap american art-wanna-be kitsch one) would be nice as well as the rarer Murnau. i wont mention Lubitsch as you should have done him before all (shame on you) and i guess in all these years you never got into Rex Ingram. but you must have the prardjanov stuff at least, stick'em on. some of us have masterpieces to make :D
BTW, you are training ignorant kidz out there who will probably end up working in LA, where majority of annual production is now VD & coke-fueled porn.
kidding, sort of, well in art quality counts not quantity. also the feelings from good art should point towards some higher enlightenment. and please up the rest of Dreyer.
thanx for your daily 6 hours chores, much appreciated.

roocoon , pls take a look at the following web-page:
http://global.yesasia.com/en/prdTransfer.aspx/pid-1004892366/

Are your copies the same ones in that page. If so I already have them, otherwise I'd like to have your copies too.

Thanks for your kind and generous offer :)

They seem to be different releases but I can't be sure.
For one thing, my copies came from Tai Seng whereas yours came from Mega Star. (Tai Seng doesn't seem to carry them in their catalog anymore).
Mine have audio in English, Chinese and Mandarin but only English subtitles. Your copies seem to have many more subtitles.

In any case, I can set them up for you if you like.
I think you'd want the uncompressed DVDs. I'll keep eMule off so you get the complete upload bandwidth.
Send me an email and I'll send you the account details.
