From the director of The Story of the Weeping Camel comes another captivatingly beautiful story of nomadic family life in the endless expanse of the Mongolian landscape. While taking a walk six-year-old Nansaa finds a little black-and-white spotted dog in a cave along the cliffs. She names him "Zochor" (or 'Spot' in English) and takes him home with her. But her father tells her to get rid of him because wild dogs attack the sheep. When her father goes on a long trip, Nansaa keeps the little dog, who becomes her trusted companion. One day she loses track of him in the tundra - and while searching for him encounters an old Nomad woman, who tells her the legend of the cave of the yellow dog. Tartan

The little nomad girl Nansal finds a baby dog in the mongolian veld, who becomes her best friend - against all rejections of her parents. Only as the little dog, Zocher, saves the life of the youngest son, father and mother finally see his good soul. A story about a mongolian family of nomads - their traditional way of life and the rising call of the City. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0432325/plotsummary)

Equal parts documentary, children's story, and narrative drama, Cave of the Yellow Dog is a beautifully filmed adventure that the entire family will enjoy. It's unique on many levels, the most notable being that the charismatic family portrayed in the film are an actual family, and none of them are professional actors. The eldest daughter (played by adorable Nansal Batchuluun) appears to be about 6 or 7 years old. Her life is nothing like that of an American first grader. She goes away to school, returning home during the summers. Nansal cares for younger sister and brother, telling them about how homes in big cities have toilets in the house. She collects dried dung for the family's fire pit and helps her mother cook. And when her father goes to town for a few days, it is Nansal who takes over his chore of leading a herd of sheep to graze in a fuller pasture miles from her home. Nansal is mature for her age, but she is still a child who can't resist cute animals. So when she finds a small black and white pup holed up in a cave, she adopts him and names him Zochor (the Mongolian equivalent of Spot). Her father--worried that the dog may have grown up feral with a pack of wolves--forbids her to keep the puppy and the viewer is never certain whether Nansal and Zochor will be able to remain together. What sets Cave of the Yellow Dog apart from films such as Lassie and Old Yeller is the breathtaking buttes, vistas, and scenery showcased in the film. Watching the apple-cheeked children squeal with laughter as they play in front of their yurt--their collapsible and movable home--viewers get the sense that they wouldn't choose any other life, even though theirs seems filled with hardship for those of us accustomed to the comforts of modern-day living. The Palme d'Or winner at the Cannes Film Festival, this movie is heartwarming and pragmatic at the same time. (--Jae-Ha Kim - Editorial Reviews - Amazon.com)

Thanks

Dear FNB47 Have downloaded your Kieslowski's Dekalog (10 episodes). Thanks for your wonderful work. I'll convert to VOB files with ConverXtoDVD software. My question is in your opinion how many episodes (each aprox 700Mb in avi) i should convert in a single standard DVD disc of 4.7G without affecting the original quality image?. In other words which will be the equivalent weight in .vob format for an XviD .avi file, keeping the same image quality? Thanks

Thanks once again, dear FNB47.

I am amazed at the quality and thoroughness of your collection and the posts. Do keep up the good work.

warm regards and best!

Thanks for another film + interview with the director!

curacautin,

I'm not an expert, but I would put 2 dekalogs on 1 DVD - 5 DVDs total.
I've transferred original Dekalog DVD9s to 6 DVD5s [ 2 on each, and then #9 separate, and #10 with Kieszlowsky interview separate ]

curacautin, I will repeat kharmok. I've never tried avi to DVD conversion (because I already have the DVDs :)) but 2 episodes on a DVD5 sounds OK.

Thanks FNB47 & kharmok.
I have almost 500 originals dvd some of them interesting. I'm thinking to upload some to rps . first question (coming others) which do you think is the best software for converting DVD files to avi divx allowing me to choose 1 or more audio tracks, 1 or more subtitle (srt), with quality and speedy.
Thanks again

curacautin,
I recommend you to follow the guides of http://www.doom9.org/
As for .srt subtitle files you can use a program named SubRip. It is free and you can download it from:
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/subrip.html
Welcome to Avax art-house movie community :))
Good luck.

i have a problem with the film: the sound with subs passes ahead the vidio.
what do i have to do for to synchronyze video and sound?
Posted By: sordo Date: 22 Dec 2007 20:02:21
LemRoo, I solved it using VirtualDub. I'm no expert with this program, I had to do it in 2 steps.

- File / Open video file --> select original avi file
- Video / Direct stream copy
- Audio / Full processing mode
- Audio / Interleaving --> "Delay audio track by" -10000 miliseconds
- File / Save old format AVI --> select a destination for the new file

Once you created the new avi file, start watching it. At 5'23" you'll see a guy closing a van's door. Use that for reference, and measure the difference between that image and the time you hear the door slamming (I don't remember if the sound was before or after the image).
Use that measure for the value of "X" in step 2:

- File / Open video file --> select the avi file you created in step 1
- Video / Direct stream copy
- Audio / Direct stream copy
- Audio / Interleaving --> "Delay audio track by" X miliseconds
- File / Save old format AVI --> select a destination for the new (final) file

I just could not do the syncronization in only one step after many tries, but I'm dumb, may be you can.
Good luck.

FNB47, thank you very much for sharing these marvelous films. I wish you and everybody in this community a happy new year!

I see that the new file generated by VirtualDub is not synchronized with the english subs (idx and sub). Here you can download the subtitles in srt format, in english & spanish:

(subtítulos en formato srt, en inglés y en español)

Thanks for this one too. :)

Im having trouble syncing this. can anyone tell the exact value of the delay I should add?
Posted By: anak_kuburan Date: 07 Jun 2008 15:11:05
Wow, FNB47! You did it again, thanks (for so big and many AGAINs).
By the way, do you have "Shattered"? (starring Tom Berenger, 1991). Danke, arigato, gracias..

<to winae> (30 May 2008):
If you're talking about subtitle, try using 'GOM Player' (it's free).
Syncing is just as easy as using the [<] or [>] on the keyboard. Have a good time.
