Born in a small town in the countryside surrounding Pistoia, Adriana is an attractive young girl who counts on using her looks to go places in the entertainment business in Rome. Moving to the capital, she works first of all in a hairdressing salon, then in a small cinema where she manages to get a job working in fancy dress. Meantime, she socializes with young men of the upper middle classes, who take her to parties and out on the town with the sole aim of taking advantage of her. Adriana knows their game, but plays along.





"Io la conoscevo bene" or "I Knew Her Well" is one of Antonio Pietrangeli’s last films before his premature death. The theme of loneliness and alienation is not new in cinema, but Pietrangeli takes it from a different angle: his heroine ,the naive countryside girl Adriana, who dreams of a career as a star in Rome, is not an escapist or introvert. On the contrary, she tries her best to socialize and befriend people , but the results are most disappointing and frustrating - people just ignore her, use her, make fun of her, exploit her body and her good intentions.Nobody is taking her seriously. Is it one of our cruel modern world's trademark? Seems to be true, because the indifference also kills. The magnificent cast of the greatest of Italian stars , each of them playing very small episodes, give distinctive characters, blood and flesh to their protagonists, though their screen life lasts no more than five minutes each. The soundtrack by Piero Piccioni, like the sound of a torn string in the middle of a tune, suggests a young life broken before it has blossomed. A 19 years old Stefania Sandrelli performs in an amazingly mature and confident way. Though she had some experience of working with great directors before (Pietro Germi), her psychological portrayal of a silly girl mesmerized by the glitter of the big city is very deep and convincing. Of course, this film was the labour of love of Antonio Pitrangeli, a very experienced director, but somewhat underrated. This film, undoubtedly, would make film critics and the audience reconsider the hierarchy of the Italian cinema.







Yo la conocía bien
Adriana ha nacido en una localidad rural cerca de Pistoia, es una chica guapa y está convencida de que puede utilizar su atractivo para abrirse camino en el mundo del espectáculo en Roma. Llegada a la capital, primero trabaja en una peluquería, luego en un pequeño cine en el que consigue empleo como acomodadora. Mientras tanto, alterna con jóvenes de la alta burguesía, que la llevan a fiestas y locales con el único objeto de poder aprovecharse de ella. Adriana lo sabe, pero no se resiste. Luego conoce al modesto agente publicitario Cianfanna, que la presenta a un amigo periodista para que escriba un artículo sobre ella. Empieza así una discreta carrera en el mundo de la publicidad. Adriana decide volver a su casa para visitar a sus padres y al llegar se entera dolorosamente de la muerte de su hermana. De vuelta a Roma, se matricula en un curso de interpretación, pero durante una clase se desmaya de repente: está embarazada y no tiene ni la menor idea de quien puede ser el padre del niño.





Nata in un centro rurale intorno Pistoia, Adriana è una ragazza attraente, convinta di poter usare il proprio fascino per farsi strada nell'ambiente romano dello spettacolo. Giunta nella capitale, lavora dapprincipio nel negozio di un parrucchiere, poi in un piccolo cinema dove riesce a farsi assumere come mascherina. Nel frattempo, frequenta i giovanotti dell'alta borghesia, che la accompagnano in giro per feste e locali con il solo scopo di poterne approfittare. Adriana lo sa, ma non oppone resistenza. Intanto, fa la conoscenza dell'agente pubblicitario Cianfanna, un modesto mestierante che la presenta ad un suo amico giornalista per farle dedicare un articolo di convenienza. Iniziata così una discreta carriera nel campo delle pubblicità, Adriana decide di tornare a casa per far visita ai genitori e, giunta a destinazione, apprende con dolore della morte della sorella. Rientrata a Roma segue lezioni di recitazione, ma durante una di queste sviene d'improvviso: è in cinta, senza avere alcuna idea di chi possa essere il padre del bambino.
