In 1828, as if out of nowhere, a young man appeared in Nuremberg's town square. He had no history, spoke only a few words, and could not stand upright. Having been locked in a basement for 17 years, Kaspar Hauser was more beast than man. Who was he, and where did he come from? Un joven apareció en la plaza central de Nuremberg en 1828. Sólo recordaba haber pasado los primeros años de su vida encadenado en un sótano, sin conocer siquiera la existencia de otros seres humanos. Con dificultad se mantenía erguido y apenas pronunciaba un par de palabras. Luego de pasar por la cárcel municipal y el circo, fue alojado en la casa del profesor Daumer, donde finalmente entró en contacto con el lenguaje, la ciencia, la música, el arte y la religión. Kaspar —así fue llamado— desarrolló en este medio convicciones y una lógica propias. Al misterio de esta verdadera y enigmática historia, que alguna vez tuvo intrigada a toda Europa, se suma el de su asesinato, que jamás fue aclarado.





L'Enigme de Kaspar Hauser
Le dimanche de Pentecôte 26 mai 1828, apparaît un jeune homme sur la grand-place de Nuremberg. Il est immobile, dans un état de saleté repoussante et tient une lettre à la main. Il peut à peine écrire son nom, Kaspar Hauser, ne sait pas lire, marche et parle avec beaucoup de difficulté. Enfermé dans la tour du château de Nuremberg, Kaspar est observé comme une bête curieuse et ses moindres gestes et paroles sont notés par un greffier. Il raconte qu'il a passé toute sa jeunesse enchaîné dans un cachot sombre et humide sans aucune relation avec l'extérieur, et qu'on lui glissait sa nourriture, du pain et de l'eau, pendant la nuit. Au contact amical du geolier et de sa famille, Kaspar apprend à connaître te monde et les règles de la civilisation.

Pour subvenir à ses besoins, Kaspar est exposé par la municipalité de la ville dans une baraque foraine. Ému par le jeune homme, le docteur Daumer le recueille chez lui et lui apprend à lire, à écrire et à jouer de la musique. Ses progrès sont tels qu'il devient très vite la coqueluche de la ville. Après avoir échappé auparavant à une première tentative d'assassinat, Kaspar Hauser revient d'une promenade, le 14 décembre 1833, la poitrine percée d'un coup de couteau. Il meurt, emportant son secret avec lui.
