Acclaimed as one of the finest Japanese films of the decade, Maborosi is a story of great love, inexplicable loss, and at last, hope and regeneration. Haunted by the mysterious loss of her grandmother, a beautiful young mother (Makiko Esumi as Yumiko) inextricably fears her eternal devotion brought forth the disheartening fate of her true love. Seeking serenity, Yumiko remarries and with her young son moves to her new husband's home in a remote village on the wild, untamed sea of Japan. There, with time, she awakens to find love, understanding, happiness and an enlightening sense of peace. New Yorker

Hirokazu Kore-eda's haunting, graceful Japanese film features a concentrated and powerfully reserved performance by Makiko Esumi as Yumiko, a young woman whose life is defined by the death and disappearance of her loved ones. As a child, she witnessed her grandmother's walking away from her family; as an adult, she must face the fact that her husband has committed suicide. (--Dave Kehr - Editorial Reviews - Amazon.com)

Impeccably lit and framed, this self-consciously classical first feature blends characteristics of two of the great Japanese masters: a sensitive portrait of a woman's suffering is reminiscent of Mikio Naruse and a serene, minimalist style is suggestive of Yasujiro Ozu. At times, Kore-eda seems to be trudging too dutifully in the path of his illustrious predecessors, and there is little in the film that could be qualified as original. Yet Maborosi remains convincing in its subtle, sustained moods and the quiet confidence of its approach. (--Dave Kehr - Editorial Reviews - Amazon.com)

A young woman's husband apparently commits suicide without warning or reason, leaving behind his wife and infant. Yumiko remarries and moves from Osaka to a small fishing village, yet continues to search for meaning in a lonely world. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0113725/plotsummary)

Japanese documentarian Hirokazu Kore-eda made his first dramatic feature with this austere drama, which recalls the visual and narrative style of Yasujiro Ozu. dvdasian

I was watching a season of "new Japanese Cinema" about 10 years ago, and I didn't like any of the "new" directors much, with the exception of Koreeda's "Afterlife" which was very promising...I've remembered it and this year I've managed to find "Afterlife" and also his latest, "Hana yori mo naho (2006)", which I haven't seen yet...

The fact you've published another film of his, proves that he's a director worth out attention and that my feelings after seeing only 1 film were correct.

Thank you very much FNB47, you've been my best Film Teacher! My film taste is only different to yours in the case of 3 or 4 films, from hundreds!

Arigato, Sensei FNB-san! ( I my broken Japanese :)))

kharmok,

>

quite normal, isnt it :)
My own film taste is also different to myself's film taste in the case of 3 or 4 films, from hundreds. Sometimes I cant explain to myself why I like "that" movie... which I shouldnt at all.
This is not the case of H.Kore-eda of course. "Maborosi" and "Afterlife" are among my all-time-favorites.
(btw: thanks again for your kind and (always exaggerated) words.:))

"(always exaggerated) words "

Well, FNB, I don't think I'm exaggerating, I try to be realistic :

If you find anyone on the internet who uploaded more art-films of the highest quality and quantity than you, then I will admit I'm exaggerating!

:)

"Sometimes I cant explain to myself why I like "that" movie... which I shouldnt at all. "

and me as well, sometimes I can't explain to myself why I don't like certain film that I "should" like ... :)))

Dear FNB47,

I would gladly and heartily second the not-really-'exaggerated' praises of kharmok. :-) And, I would like to profusely thank you for the depth/range/reach of your film collection - and for the quality rips and synced subtitles and whatnot. I am not even talking about the 'generosity' factor. :-)

Films of Otar Iosseliani and others that I was eager to see (for quite a while0 became possible only thru you and avaxhome. Also, when you posted the films of some directors that I had not even heard of, I went ahead (the rule: about 95% of the films posted by you, kharmok and galmuchet are worth watching a few times (to savour them) and the rest atleast once) downloaded and saw them - and I was never disappointed.

Please keep up the good work - and season's greetings.
