Told from the perspective of two children, and in four parts, which run parallel to seasons, KASABA describes relationships between members of a Turkish family in a small town. The first part is in a primary school where the family's 11-year-old daughter is a pupil. It shows the social environment to which she has to adopt, and its difficulties. She faces with her feeling of shame and some merciless clues of life... The second part is in spring. We see the girl with her brother, who is four years younger, and their journey to the cornfield where their family are waiting for them. As they pass through the countryside, they encounter the mysteries of nature and wildlife... In the third part the brother and sister witness the complexities and darkness of the adult world... The fourth part takes place at home. This is a tranquil sequence moving between reality and dream. Artificial Eye

The story of a family living in a small godforsaken town in Turkey seen through the eyes of children and dealing with the growing complexity when one becomes an adult. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0143334/plotsummary)

This is a very fresh and unusual film that explores the experiences of two children in a small rural town in Turkey in a slow and stylized manner. It seems to encapsulate the experiences of one year into a day, with the morning and school set in the winter, the journey home in the spring, and the evening in the summer/autumn, giving the film a very different feel to it. It possesses a dream like quality, even at times blending dreams with reality. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0143334/usercomments)

A self motivated cinema volunteer Nuri Bilge Ceylan Shot Kasaba after his short film Cocoon (Koza)sounded successfully among Turkish Filmmakers. With a slow rhythm but not a routine, film takes you to a small town (kasaba). Photographic quality of the film is excellent. Script may have shortcomings but never mind with his full amateur crew Ceylan figured out a remarkable and promising vision for Turkish Cinema. Town deserved to be viewed... Nuri Bilge Ceylan was a famous photographer before he became a promising Turkish director. Nuri Bilge Ceylan's short movie shows how talented he is as a photographer. It is also an evidence for the following films of him. It is in black and white and catches great pictures. Faces of the old couples are wonderful. You have to watch it as any other Ceylan movie: just sit, be patient and watch all the beautiful scenes and feel the story. For instance, in KOZA you gonna feel the death and born. It is definitely warming watching KOZA after all fast, cuts effects movies. If you like Distant, you gonna love KOZA. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0231931/)

Just watched "KOZA" and the quoted reviewer was mistaken when mentioning "old couples". There's just one couple, and they're Ceylan's parents.

In "Uzak" you can clearly feel Tarkovsky's influence on the director. In "Koza" more than an influence, Tarkovsky seems to be Ceylan's obsession.
