Bold in its stylistic modesty, sublime in its narrative simplicity, Jean-Marie Straub's CHRONICLE OF ANNA MAGDALENA BACH offers one of the purest film-listening experiences in the history of cinema. New Yorker Video

Featuring the unadorned but historically accurate presentation of live recordings of more than twenty Bach compositions by one of the twentieth century's preeminent interpreters of the master's work, the Dutch harpsichordist and organist Gustav Leonhardt, CHRONICLE utilizes music, as Straub himself once said, not as an accompaniment, nor as commentary, but as aesthetic material. New Yorker Video

Co-written by Straub's wife and longtime collaborator, Daniele Huillet, the film relies on excerpts gleaned from historical records, which are brought to life by Leonhardt's Bach and fellow harpsichordist Christiane Lang's portrayal of Anna Magdalena, Bach's second wife. In voice-over readings from Anna Magdalena's diary, Lang provides the dramatic context of this unconventional biopic, wherein the tension and release of the day-to-day hardships of a great composer are granted fullest expression in extended scenes of orchestral performance. New Yorker Video

CHRONICLE exemplifies cinemas unique ability to exalt the beauty to be found in its fellow art forms. New Yorker Video

A chronicle of Johann Sebastian Bach's life, eschewing drama to focus almost entirely on his music. Narrated by his wife Anna in voiceover, it consists largely of static scenes of Bach conducting and/or playing his brilliant compositions. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0062804/plotsummary)

Another interesting surprise, thanks you so much!

Huillet died recently and Straub said he will stop directing.
For me Straub, as Pedro Costa has stated, was the most modern
and the most ancient filmmaker of the modern era. His movies were much
more interesting than anything Godard, Antonioni, Resnais or Bergman created.
A true heir of Dreyer and Ford he belongs to a group of giants. Regarding post-war
European Cinema he can only be compared to Bresson and Rossellini.
Please FNB47 upload any movie of Straub-Huillet you have.
As always, I am eternally grateful to your posts.

COLLECTANEA, "Class Relations" and "Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach" are the only films by Straub+Huillet I've seen on big-screen so far. I also will be able to upload "Class Relations" in couple of weeks I hope.

Great news FNB47!!!
Just now I download from emule a tv-rip
of "Class Relations". I have seen many
Straub-Huillet films long ago at cinema.
I think their bests are "Not Reconciled"
and "From the Clouds to the Resistance". If you are
interested, here are some dvds of their work:

Thanks for this beauty, FNB47.

This might just be me, but the audio is out of synch in my .avi. If this happens to anybody else, here's how to correct it:

Open file with VDub.
In Video, select "Direct stream copy"
In Streams, select "Stream list"
Right click on audio stream and select "interleaving"
In "Audio skew correction", "Delay audio track by": type in 1300
Save file with different name.

scalisto thanks for the warning. Now I checked DGIndex output and realized that there is a -220 ms delay. Unfortunately it is too late now. I'd better be more careful from now on :(

aisy13,
I recommend you to use VLC-player (www.videolan.org). It is one of the best players and it is free.

Start VLC player and then :
- File - Open File - browse for movie-file
- check "Use a subtitles file" box
- browse for subtitle file (the one with *.idx extension)
- click OK
and when movie starts pls select
- Video
- Subtitle Track - Track 1, Track 2... etc.
