“A Heroic Song from a Towering World of Heights” — German filmmaker and doctor Arnold Fanck (1889-1974) made this beautifully photographed Bergfilm, or ‘mountain film’, in 1926. Written in three days and nights — especially for Riefenstahl — The Holy Mountain took over a year to film in the Alps with an entourage of expert skiers and climbers.

Ostensibly a love triangle romance — between Riefenstahl’s young dancer and the two explorers she encounters — Fanck relishes the glorious Alpine landscape by filming death-defying climbing, avalanche-dodging, and frenetic downhill ski racing.

After learning the ropes from Fanck, Riefenstahl’s own Bergfilme flowered at UFA during the 1930s, and Fanck became her editor. This restoration is a visual feast — a fascinating look at the origins of a genre.

great post, thanks! but I have one question... you mentioned that there is Ray Müller movie (The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl) included in Special Features, but its not! There are only three options when you start the DVD - 'start. chapters and audio'. So can you post the documentary too, if you have it?

thanks in advance...

I just registered to thank you in person for all your wonderful uploads.
The quality of your postings is priceless, nowhere else have I found full Criterions or other rarities like "The Holy Mountain".
May I ask you if you are planning to post the second disc with the documentary?

Gee, what wonderful news!
I can´t wait to download it.
You have mentioned that you also accept requests.
Any chances for more Silents?
Posted By: CerealRipper Date: 15 Apr 2009 03:29:21
Definitely! From MoC "The Naked Island", Faust, Nosferatu, Michael, Metropolis and others... and a bunch from Criterion as well. I'll probably upload "The Naked Island" as my next MoC, although it isn't the silent movie you're probably talking about, it is close. But i'll continue to upload many others as well.
