Brilliant share! Not actually 'Criterion' though. The 'Eclipse' series is Janus's label for non-remastered - but very classic and recommended - films. The 'Criterion' label is for the restored/remastered issues. Eclipse are still better quality than other versions. Many thanks.

Eclipse is a series from Criterion, The Criterion Collection Eclipse Series. It is not a non-remastered label, all of these movies were recentely remastered and thatis why they were acquired by criterion and released together in a eclpse Series. The remastering wads done by Shochiku, which is by far more competent than Criterion for remastering. Many Criterion releases, be it Eclipse or not, are remastered by the original Japanese studios, and not Criterion itself.

BTW, Janus does not own Eclipse, eclipse belongs to the Criterion Collection and the same owners of the Criterion Collection also own Janus.Actually the whole Criterion Collection studio is joint venture between Janus Films and the Voyager Company.

Oh! Sorry, 'my bad', as they say. I thought Janus was the parent company, and that Criterion and Eclipse were sub-labels, born out of Janus. But you're right. And yes - Eclipse IS part of the Criterion collection! Very interesting to read what you said about the remastering, thanks for the info.

One thing to keep in mind, when you buy these exact same titles from Shochiku (japanese DVD) you pay around $150, they come with extras, but the image quality is the same.

Same quality? I thought the Criterion/Eclipse ones would have got rid of that slightly green hue that other versions have? Anyhow, I'm happy to get yours as they will still be better quality than the current DivX ones. It'll take me 24 hours, but will be worth it! What is it about Ozu that is so pleasing? There's hardly any story to them, and yet they are such a joy to watch. I suppose it's the 'human' element. :)

Les, i don't know what versions you're talking about, the Japanese DVDs are the exact same Transfer, Criterion actually got these japanese transfers and used for the Eclipse, and they have no green cast. Usually the japanese DVDs are way better than the criterion, sound and image, but sometimes Criterion use the best japanese transfer available. The editions i am talking abou are these:

Oh right. Yeah, the Japanese generally have excellent quality control - their CDs and vinyl are second-to-none also. I think my 'greeny' ones are possibly UK releases.

Anyone else having problems burning these? Even with AnyDVD activated I can't get any software to accept them - they all say 'please check it is valid and not copyrighted'. Strange! Can still play in VLC and GOM though.

Just check the region, it could be set to region 1. Or maybe i left the RipGuard on.... and then you would have to rip the image. But i tested the original here with Toast Titanium and didn't find any problems recording it.

Dang. Yeah, I know about regions and stuff - no good! Mine must have become corrupt when I downloaded them. I have many ripping programs and none of them will rip these images, they all say the files are invalid or copyrighted. When I point Alcohol to any of the images or try to mount them, it says 'image file does not exist'!!! D'oh. No one else has complained, so I guess mine have become corrupt. Oh well.

Don't delete your image till further tests.... If you can play with VLC and everything, the whole movie is inside with menus and the rest, then your image should be perfect.... it probably has a RipGuard on it, i probably forgot to remove...

Try a ripper which can deal with ripguard. Or try to rip the MAIN FEATURE ONLY, some option like that.... and lets see if your image is ok. BTW, did this happen to all your images or just one? Did you try Handbrake?

Yeah, Handbrake is my favourite ripper. I also extracted the VOBs from the image and tried to rip those, but no luck. I have 'AnyDVD' which is great for getting around protection - but that only works for real discs or mounted images. And I can't mount these images for some reason! I will try this Roxio thing you suggest and report back.

Try mounting the imges with the Roxio app, i created the Iso with a Roxio app, but the problem may lie with the stupid software i decided to use to save time, Mac DVDRipper Pro, it rips any DVD but it sometimes does not remove Ripguard or Arccos.

No luck I'm afraid. I also tried DVDFab, which removes Ripguard and Arccos. But it wouldn't recognise the iso files. I tried drag-and-drop, and I tried opening them in the ripper's browser. But nothing happens! I'm sure it's my files that are corrupt, as no one else is reporting problems, so please don't be worried. Yes, I can play them in VLC and GOM, but the menus don't work - the menus appear when I open the file for about a fifth of a second, then the main movie automatically starts. So something is wrong with my iso files. Still, at least I can watch them on my PC.
If any other rippers are reading this, maybe they can rip these fine films to DivX/XviD, around 1.4GB and post them? ;)

I'll upload new images, you can't possibly have downloaded 5 corrupt images! I would like to have more feedback, but 5 corrupt images in a row is impossible. And if they got corrupted it would have been the rar extractor that you have used, otherwise you wouldn't have extracted them without errors. Do you still have the rar files? I am testing all the images again here and i'll let you know what i find.

This is what i found, all the 5 images have some sort of protection on i don't know which one and I don't know why it was left on. They all work perfectly on Macs (OS X), can be burned into a DVD and played without any problems on any software, but maybe windows users may find some trouble. I'll re-upload them this week, till then be advised you may face some difficulties trying to bun these on Windows.

Lez, let me know if you find any trouble with other images, other eclipse and criterions.

I have the same LezDawson problems to burn the 5 Ozus. Also with the film "Under My Skin" from the "Ernest Hemingway Film Collection", with all the 6 films of the "Eric Rohmer Six Moral Tales", and also with "Salo, Or the 120 Days Of Sodom". Downloading now the Eclipse films by Kurosawa.
I tried many kind of software to rip them again and burn them but with NO success. I'm windows user. If anybody find the solution please, report here!

Anyway, thanks for your responses CerealRipper (and for your wonderful uploads!)

Thanks CR. The reason I thought all 5 were corrupt just for me, was because I did have quite a few probs with corrupt rars and had to re-download about 10% of the rars. So I just assumed that even after extracting there must still be some corruption present. However, looks like it's not just me now, so the problem is with the original files, not my copies. Oh well - I'll look forward to getting these again, but I'll have to wait until my RS quota is topped up again! I'm in no rush anyway as I have loads of stuff to watch, so I'll probably grab your re-ups in a few weeks.

My experience so far:

Early Spring [ECL014] Worked like a charm. No problems encoding a quick .avi with AGK to test the timings in Spanish subs. No problems with DVDRebuilder/CCE making a custom DVD5 with Spanish subtitles.

Since reading this thread, I made a quick check with AGK on the shortest .VOBs of [ECL015]and [ECL016]. Encoded with NO PROBLEMS.
Another quick check with meGUI on [ECL017]: avs script created with no problems, aborted while encoding since it was just a test.

Windows XP SP3, AMD Phenom 9650 Quad-Core. XviD: Koepi's latest version on AGK, encraw's latest version on meGUI.

Can people test the scalisto settings and report success as well? Ill re-upload ALL the DVDs that AnarchicBuddha has mention, every single one, but if people can find a solution for the problem avoiding having to download all over again it would be great. But everything will be up again this weekend completely unlocked, region free and and working as it should. Stupid me for trying a crapy software to rip the DVDs...

Try to burn the image for "Early Spring" - it didnt work.
So I extracted the actual VOB's with 7-zip.
Tried to play the extracted DVD and there seems to be an error with "....video_ts/video_ts.vob" - I get the message "Invalid data in file".

I will wait for your re-up - appreciate you taking the time.

On a general note - the numbering of the Eclipse releases seems a little strange. Do they give the box set an EC### number and then each induvidual title an EC### number?

eg. Box Set EC045, Disc 1 EC046, Disc 2 EC047

[Actually I think that is what they do with the criterion releases, which I can understand to some extent as the boxed set titles are often avaialble induvidually - but aren't the Eclipse titles box sets only]

THey give the first number to the box and the following numbers to the discs. this one is ECL013, the first movie is ECL014. You can see the printed catalog number in the scans.

I've downloaded Early Spring, unrar'd the ISO with WinRAR 3.71, and mounted it on a virtual DVD drive with Alcohol 120% (v1.9.5). CyberLink PowerDVD 7.3. I had no problems at all playing the DVD. It was perfect. I've not tried burning it onto a DVD yet, but it will probably work.

I was in the middle of downloading Tokyo Twilight, but the files have now been removed from rapidshare...! :(

Since i didn't get any positive feedback about the images nor any solutions for the problems some posters are facing i decided to delete all the images here and on another posts, like the hemingway films, the kurosawa eclipse, Eric Rohmer, and Saló. I am testing all the images i created last week and anyone that is not fully unlocked and region free will be deleted.

But don't worry it will al be up till this weekend! Not interchangeable of course...

With Early Spring, I copied the VIDEO_TS folder from the virtual DVD drive to another drive, then burnt that on a dual-layer DVD with DVDFab Platinum 4.0.1.0. It worked fine.

I did unzip the parts and iso with Winrar, GOM player played the movie. I tried for Early Spring and Tokyo Twilight. It seems OK. But I did not try to write it on a DVD.

Hi again,

Tried different ways reported here to burn properly the Ozus with NO success (also Salo, Eric Rohmer boxset and Under My Skin). In fact: I can unzip them, I can rip them again, even I can burn them but there is a problem to watch them in a domestic DVD player due the restrictions of region code and the problems with copyright protection (ripguard, macrovision, arcoss or some sort of protection). I can watch them in my PC via VLC and GOM but I like to burn this stuff in a double layer DVD and enjoy the full quality of the wonderful stuff posted here recently by CerealRipper.

I have downloaded 3 Kurosawas by now (from the eclipse boxset) and they work fine (almost for me). I can burn them in a double layer DVD with CloneDVD and play them in any domestic DVD player and DVD computer. This time all the process was very easy. So, CerealRipper, I recommend leave the actual images for downloading more time if anybody doesn't report problems for this Kurosawa boxset. It's your decision.

@CerealRipper: Keep up your wonderful job, and again MANY, MANY BIG THANKS for your response, your understanding and your patience here and in other posts.

Still downloading the rest of Kurosawas and waiting the re-uploads. THANKS AGAIN!!!

I'll update all of them tomorrow or maybe tonight. THe Kurosawa's seem to be ok, but they were ripped with the same software, i used this software because it rips 6-10 times faster the my "perfect" and usual way. I'll update the kurosawa only next week, to leave some time for others to finish the download they have begun. I would recommend you to download these here by tomorrow and start downloading the kurosawa next week with the new rips, eventhough people are reporting success with the kurosawa's.

I have downloaded the NEW links of THE END OF SUMMER, EQUINOX FLOWER and LATE AUTUMN, and all the process has been completed correctly: the 3 images were unzipped, ripped and burned in a double-layer DVDs and watched in a domestic DVDplayer and DVDcomputer with NO problems.

Also EARLY SPRING and TOKYO TWILIGHT downloaded and burned without problems.

Sorry to be bearer of bad news - but these new rips (for me) are no different to the original rips. Still won't convert to DivX (tried a variety of programs), still all saying protected or producing corrupted/unwatchable copies. Also will not mount on virtual drive (same as old ones). However, they WILL burn on dual layer DVD (as did the old ones). :)

Very weird, these are completely unlocked and region free and i even tested on windows (reading, burning and ripping) before uploading again and they worked perfectly fine. These are the grabs from a software that rips and evaluates DVDs checking the ISO image posted here and Handbrake (that you told me you also use for ripping). Both telling the ISOs here are completely fine:

You might have some other problem or perhaps you are using the old images and made a confusion? This time all the feedback i got is positive, like my other Rips, they are working fine. I can't really think of anything that might have caused this problem you said.

Who knows mate. I know I'm not confusing the rips - I deleted them all then downloaded again from your new link. They burn perfectly to DVD, but will not mount on a virtual drive and will not convert to DivX! I also tried ripping to DivX from the burned discs, but no joy either. Very strange. Oh well, I have these fine films now, so certainly not complaining! Thanks! :)

As you can read in my previous message the re-upload images worked fine for me this time. The IFO, VOB and BUP files even can be extracted from the ISO and re-encode them with DVDShrink or CloneDVD, if you like, to a smaller size.

Yes, it's very strange that you can't do the rip from the burned disc to make the DivX.

Try with UltraISO, The ISO images can be mounted fine in a virtual drive, then you can do easily made rips from there with another program. UltraISO is a software very easy to manage. Tell us if it works.

Sadly, the Entire collection seems to be offline...

at least Rapidshare is out.

The hotfile I am not sure of

It gives ECL015 part 1-5, however, they are all 200MB but from experience, the last one should be smaller than the first group so it seems to be missing at least part 6

and the scans are both offline as well...
