Claude Chabrol's Les Bonnes Femmes is a triumphant rediscovery: a deft blend of frank eroticism, moments of Hitchcockian suspense and cinematic derring-do that characterizes the best films of the French New Wave. In the drab and dingy Paris of the early sixties, four shop-keeping girls are looking for love -- of one kind or another. While their lecherous and petty boss savors every opportunity to deliver a dressing-down, the girls find emotional escape by flirting with delivery men, wandering the nightclubs and gossiping about the enigmatic motorcyclist who hangs about, following Jacqueline (Clotilde Joano), the doe-eyed romantic. For the vulnerable, timid Jacqueline, his dogged persistence can only signify the true love in which she so fervently believes. But when she finally decides to speak to the mysterious stranger, her dreams of romantic bliss are marred only by nagging suspicions... Les Bonnes Femmes is a tense yet airy drama which reminds us that love and danger often walk hand in hand. Kino Video

Ginette (S. Audran), Rita, Jacqueline and Jane (B. Lafont) try to find fulfillment and love in their lives. Rita has a fiancé whose family is obsessed with social distinction; Jane has a boy-friend in the army, but does not hesitate to enjoy herself with chance encounters; Ginette has a mysterious passion that keeps her away from her colleagues at nights. Jacqueline is lonely; but who is that mysterious bike-rider who is constantly following her ? (http://imdb.com/title/tt0053666/plotsummary)

The bonnes femmes of Claude Chabrol's film are four shop girls at a small appliance store in Paris. Good-time girl Bernadette Lafont spends her nights in empty flirtations with boorish womanizers, while social-climbing Lucile Saint-Simon withers under the disdainful gaze of her boyfriend's haughty parents. Seemingly confident Stéphane Audran secretly follows her dream of singing on the stage (losing her composure when she recognizes her friends in the audience), and demure Clotilde Joano holds out for the romantic notion of pure, innocent love....

It's her story that Chabrol favors when she falls under the gaze of a motorcycle-riding stalker who finally reveals himself to be a shy, lovesick suitor, a Prince Charming in black leather. Les Bonnes Femmes was a flop when released, but has since been embraced as one of Chabrol's best films and a masterpiece of the French new wave. There's a breezy naturalism that invigorates the film: easy, seemingly spontaneous ensemble performances, the immediacy of shooting on location, and a loose, episodic story full of rich detail. But this is no urban fairy tale: the dreams of these girls are frustrated by a tawdry and brutal world in a shocking, sad finale....

Never callous or dismissive, there's a fragile beauty to Chabrol's troubled portrait as he stubbornly holds out hope for these dreamers in a delicately melancholy coda. (--Sean Axmaker - Editorial Reviews - Amazon.com)

I have not seen this one before so here is another nice surprise from FNB47. Thank you once again, generous friend.

FNB47, thanks for this one. Looks like this is the Kino release with hardcoded english subs (since no other DVD edition seems to exist), Am I right? Also, given that you seem to be covering almost every important french and italian cinema author, is any of Andre Techine's films in your upcoming list? Techine is a great filmmaker whose films are impossible to find on the internet. Also, are you planning to do the recent Criterion edition of Lindsay Anderson's If....?I'm asking because if so, I'll stop looking for it in other places and wait till you post it here. Thanks in advance for your answers.

seventh_art hello, yes you are right, this one is Kino-release with forced Eng. s/t. Well I'm not very fond of Téchiné, I mean, not among my very-top-favorites, but I'm thinking of posting "Rendez-vous" in the future... I am a great admirer of Lindsay Anderson, I havent bought Criterion release of "If..." yet, but I surely will buy it and post a 2-CD rip of it...
