Sloth was formed in 1999 from the remnants of cult doom metal bands Godzilla and Mourn, and featured singer Gaz Ricketts, guitarist Roland Scriver, bassist Will Palmer, and drummer Vince Scriver.
| “ | After making its live debut opening for Spirit Caravan at the Marquee Club, the quartet inevitably signed with Lee Dorrian's doom-specialized Rise Above label, and entered Backstage Studios in mid-2000 to prepare its ominously titled first album, The Voice of God, with Orange Goblin producer Dave Chang. When they eventually emerged, the seven-track colossus they'd recorded more than did their name justice, boasting some of the slowest dirges and lowest tunings within the human hearing spectrum. Drinking from the same well as Black Sabbath and Sleep, Sloth presents the listener with oppressive doom rock and ominous sonic sludge. Never descending into self-indulgent noise-fests, this group maintains a recognizable rhythm and melody, even if that melody is attenuated to the point of being absorbed as another rhythm line. This should succeed with fans of heavy '70s rock and stoner rock. ~ by by Ed Rivadavia, allmusic.com | ” |
