Purcell - The Purcell Manuscript, Davitt Moroney

The discovery in London in late 1993 of a small manuscript of harpsichord music in the handwriting of Henry Purcell made news around the world. Picked up at a sale in a miscellaneous lot of eighteenth-century music by an antiquarian book dealer, it is the first major Purcell manuscript to have come to light this century. Considering that only fifteen or sixteen of his autographs have survived in total, one can understand why it caused such a stir. Even better, it contains five previously unknown pieces and six unique keyboard versions of known theatre pieces. The little book was sold at Sotheby's in May 1994 for £276,000, a record for a manuscript of English music. When the anonymous buyer applied for a licence to export the manuscript abroad, the licence was withheld by the department of National Heritage and a successful campaign was launched by the British Library and the Purcell Tercentenary Trust to raise the money to purchase it for the nation. It is now safe for posterity in the British Library.
The new manuscript includes a total of twenty harpsichord pieces by Purcell plus his copy of Orlando Gibbons' Preludium in C from Parthenia (1612/13), one of the most popular of all seventeenth-century English keyboard works. But there is more: at the other end of the manuscript are seventeen pieces in the hand of Giovanni Battista Draghi, a harpsichordist long resident in London, undoubtedly acquainted with Purcell and, as a composer for the keyboard at least, not much inferior to him. This recording includes all the pieces in the manuscript, the only known harpsichord music in the hand of either composer.
