This is my favourite disc of RVW's chamber music, not least for its programming. It has become typical to pair the two numbered quartets with the phantasy quintet, but this is not ideal because it gives the listener two early works coupled with a jarringly different late one. The first good choice in the programming on this Nash Ensemble disc is to replace the first quartet with the late violin sonata, an under-performed masterpiece. The second is to add as a "bonus" two more pieces to increase the richness and diversity of the set. The Lake in the Mountains is a beautiful impressionistic piano piece, but at the same time fully recognisable as having RVW's tonal fingerprints on it. The English folk song studies are minor works, but in the context of this programme they absolutely shine.
