Verdi - Macbeth [De Sabata]
EAC Rip | Classical (opera) | 2 CD | FLAC + CUE + Logs | Scans 300 dpi | 320 mb | RS + SM + FS | TT 02:19:02
Released: March 17, 1998 | Label: Emi Classics | Recorded: 12/07/1952 - Live · Teatro Alla Scala, Milan, Italy

Italo Tajo, Gino Penno, Attilio Barbesi, Enzo Mascherini, Angela Vercelli, Maria Callas, Dario Caselli, Ivo Vinco, Mario Tommasini, Luciano della Pergola
Milan Teatro alla Scala Orchestra, Milan Teatro alla Scala Chorus, Victor De Sabata (conductor)

This is an opera that EMI should have recorded with Callas in the studio, but it never happened, so we are lucky to have this recording of the 1952 live performance from La Scala. While the sound is boxy, dry, and lacking in range, it remains listenable and the ear quickly adjusts. Callas is an Amazonian Lady Macbeth, and it's a thrill a minute. Her voice, as heard here, is huge, powerful, and completely steady as she spews venom at every turn. The effects achieved by Callas on this performance are easier heard and experienced than discussed. Not surprisingly, the Macbeth of Enzo Mascherini is not on this level, but he manages a creditable performance in a role that should have been cast with Tito Gobbi (the only Macbeth who would have met Callas on equal ground). Victor de Sabata conducts a dramatic and searing performance. For Callas fans, this set is an absolute must. -- Amazon customer

This is the most TERRIBLE master of the only Macbeth with Maria Callas.
EMI made a direct copy without the permission of Arkadia. Arkadia "repaired" the "gap" where the radio transmission almost was gone. With the aproval of Leyla Gencer Arkadia made this repair. Listen to track 18...it is Leyla Gencer NOT maria Callas!!
EMI made this terrible cd in 1997 and even after they had to remove ALL cd's from the Italian market they are still selling this "remastering"!!
Listen to the MYTO remastering, I had it on Nuova Era and on the ADDA label, here you can hear the true performance with Callas. Even in the EMI version you can hear a lot of pre echo's!!
(just before án after Vieni tafretta!!)
EMI...nice cover...but THAT'S ALL!!

READ THIS GREAT ARTICLE ON CALLAS AND EMI!!
from: http://www.divinarecords.com/

Lastly, EMI’s 1993 version of the 1952 Scala Macbeth has little weight or bass, but Callas sounds present and articulate, if a bit bright. Ramsay’s 1997 remastering increases this brightness to the point of listening discomfort; further, any trace of Callas’ rich, powerful 1952 sound is disappointingly absent. During the original 1952 broadcast, the sound level dropped precipitously in the a cappella ensemble near the end of the first act. In both EMI versions, the damaged section is replaced by two minutes from a 1960 Leyla Gencer performance. While EMI explains the "pre-" and "post-echo" of its original source (caused by tape print-through) on the back liner and booklet—problems that do not mar private issues of the performance—there is no mention of the far more significant substitution. Ironically, Arkadia Records, which also substituted the 1960 Gencer performance section, sued EMI in Milan for pirating their mastering of Macbeth.

LISTEN AND COMPARE TRACK 18!!
this is the original recording....

if you don't want to download the EMI version to compare...the Documents label made a direct copy of EMI!! so...compare track 18 at the end!!!! when they are "speak-singing"....it is GENCER!!

BUT.....THNX TO THE UPLOADER!!! AS ALWAYS!!
