From the introductory notes by David Butchart: "In February 1954, as part of a promotional campaign, Deutsche Grammophon produced a now legendary 10-inch LP titled Musik ... Sprache der Welt (Music - the Universal Language), that presented selections of its then current recordings. That LP, now a rare collector's item, consisted of extracts of works by the great composers. Each selection had a brief spoken introduction and was intended as a marketing tool for salesmen, to give - as Deutsche Grammophon wrote - "An impression of the breath and quality of our repertoire, a kind of calendar in sound". By reviving the title....we have developed this series to re-create the flavour and the spirit of those times at Deutshce Grammophon. The new 10-CD set of chronologically-ordered orchestral works - from Haydn to Bruckner - features familiar iconic recordings..."

Thanks go to the original uploader, who did a fantastic job on the scans and rips. These were shared via Demonoid in 2006 or prior to that. I don't quite recall the exact date. But there is a Part II that will be posted here in a short while. I am sharing this with his permission.

ENJOY!

Thanks to you, too. This is a great piece of history and has some wonderful things on it.

This is great. The sound quality is unbelievable. The tag names are extra long and I have to use Flash Renamer so I can see who is playing what for easier reference, but that is trivial. I can't believe that there has been no other thank yous for this. I am listening to an old recording I had on Heliodor ( A DG budget line in the U.S) - The Schumann Symphony 4. It's the only reading of any of Schumann's symphonic works that qualifies as truly excellent. That's why this Furtwangler recording from 1953 is considered the 'holy grail' of Schumann recordings.
Thanks again. (And who was the original ripper of this, anyway)? A big thank you to him/her also.

Hey, Acaciatree! I am so glad that you realized. Some of these I also owned on LP. An Heliodor LP here in Buenos Aires, a Beethoven 5th that is not amongst these CD's. I made a transfer from the LP, you can hear Furtwängler banging his foot on the podium to keep the beat. Remember how his hands use to fly off in all directions. Well his foot kept time.

Sorry, can't tell you whose upload it was. He is well-known in the classical community. His presentations are always incredibly good and flashy and made with expert hands and lots of care.

Frankly, I think that the most valuable in this box are the Lehmann and Fricsay recordings. I will upload Box II during the weekend. I am somewhat besotted by Fricsay and I weep and wail at the thought that he was the true legacy to Toscanini. Had he not passed away at the age of 42, there would have been a lesser Karajan. Fritz Busch also died when he was 50 and so did van Beinum [1950 I think]. These are, for me, the true legacy of The Maestro. Not even Cantelli measured up to Fricsay. [I am a FAN!! big FAN]
