Editorial Reviews - Amazon.com
When Istvan Kertesz drowned while swimming in Israel, the world lost a major conductor of irresistible musicality and charm... This was Istvan Kertesz' last major project. Early in the 1960s, he had conducted the Dvorřak symphonies with such authority that he recorded the complete cycle for London--an epoch-making set that's still highly recommended today. For those recordings Kertesz had the London Symphony Orchestra, but his best recordings were made in Vienna. His notorious dislike of rehearsals was bound to appeal to the equally relaxed and tradition-conscious Viennese, particularly when it came to music they knew well. The result is a real musical love-in, with the orchestra the star of the show and the performance some of the best Brahms that money can buy. --David Hurwitz
***
This is a really excellent performance and it's only a pity that it hasn't come down in price—in fact, it has gone up. This orchestra plays marvellously for Kertesz. The strings 'sing', wind solos are a delight, the brass snarls splendidly from bar 224 in the first movement. In this, by the way, you will hear eight bars of Brahms you have probably never heard before, for Kertesz observes the exposition repeat. The second movement is often very touching, while the third has a lively opening tempo, which means that the greatest virtuosity is needed in the trios, and this it gets. The finale has distinction and the recording, especially at the end, has real brilliance. T.H. Gramophone, February 1975 on Symphony No. 2
***
Apart from the First Symphony, T. H. was loud in his praises of the Kertesz set of Brahms symphonies when they first appeared, and rightly so. They are superbly played by the Vienna Philharmonic and this account of No. 3 is deeply musical, unaffected and natural, distinguished by warm string tone and eloquent wind playing. The wind blend beautifully, even the somewhat thin Viennese oboe tone sounds splendidly expressive. The first movement could have greater momentum perhaps; incidentally, Kertesz observes the exposition repeat as do Abbado and Boult. The slow movement is played without any exaggerated expression but with relaxed, unforced feeling. The recording is exceptionally well-balanced; it has just the right perspective and the relationship between wind and the rest of the orchestra, which seems to baffle many balance engineers these days, could not be more musically or naturally judged. R.L. April 1975. Gramophone, on Symphony No. 3

It seems that there is growing interest for Brahms Symphonies. So, here is my small contribution. I’m sorry there are no scans, because I download this from Mininova one year (or so) ago. If someone has them, please share with us.

Any Brahms music (especially symphonies) is very welcomed, friend! Indeed, this is a super rare recording - I've never seen such recording before, I must try it. :) If you guys have any other Brahms, please go ahead and share with us, great thanks!

Thanks for these lossless versions.
Also recommeded, at least by me, are Bernard Haitink, Concertgebouw on Philips.. If nobody has them, perhaps I will post them.
Posted By: rhythmic_impulse Date: 07 Oct 2009 12:50:32
@acaciatree
Bernard Haitink will be a great addition to all the BRahms available here...

@walstein
Thanks for this...is there another disc for Symphony no 1 from Kertesz?

awesome, thank you.

I accidentally deleted No. 1 for hard (before I burn it). So no No. 1. But I have complete symphonies with Giulini (for EMI) excellent no. 1 with Ancerl, and specially excellent No. 4 with Reiner (for Chesky). So, if anybody is interested...
Posted By: rhythmic_impulse Date: 07 Oct 2009 20:20:23
@waldstein

Geee...it's a pity No 1 is gone. It's hard to get a copy of the SHM-CD version altho its available under Decca Double series. But thanks again for the upload of the rest.

Thank you! This is a superb post!
Regarding others... well, Brahms last symphony is one of my favourites, and so is Giulini as a conductor... I'd LOVE to hear those EMI versions...
Thanks again, waldstein!

That link leads to a torrent file from Mininova. Probably the same where waldstein got the files. Anyway, it's not active for over a year... no seeds or leech...
