Sonny LANDRETH : South of 1-10 (1995)
Easy CD-DA Rip | Flac | No Cue, No Log | HQ covers | 324 Mb
Southwest Louisiana-based guitarist, songwriter and singer Sonny Landreth is a musician's musician. The blues slide guitar playing found on his two Zoo Entertainment releases, Outward Bound (1992) and South of I-10 (1995) is distinctive and unlike anything else you've ever heard. His unorthodox guitar style comes from the manner in which he simultaneously plays slide and makes fingering movements on the fret board. ....

Best known as the saxman who replaced Chicago harmonica/keyboard player Howard Levy in Bela Fleck's Flecktones (admittedly several years after he left), Jeff Coffin here takes a similar type of approach to the music with some of the same musicians. Drummer Futureman (Roy Wooten) is the drummer throughout, while banjo virtuoso Fleck and killer bassist Victor Wooten make appearances. The music is as freewheeling and kaleidoscopic as you would expect from someone's Coffin's pedigree.

| “ | Following his superb 1998 Robert Johnson Songbook collaboration with Nigel Watson, Peter Green's inspired comeback ensues with this sequel of Johnson classics. From "I'm a Steady Rolling Man" on, it is delightfully clear that the Fleetwood Mac founder's soulful guitar virtuosity is wedded to a voice, beaten into majesty, that's well suited for these haunting Delta jewels. With partner Watson providing skilled support, such untouchables as "Come On in My Kitchen" and "Hellhound on My Trail" eerily echo the originals in their new arrangements, while bearing Green's stamp. As if the soloists and their fine Splinter Group weren't enough, Green & Co. are joined by special guests Dr. John (the lilting piano on "From Four Till Late"), Buddy Guy (guitar on "Cross Road Blues"), Hubert Sumlin (guitar on "Dead Shrimp Blues"), and David "Honeyboy" Edwards, who accompanied Robert Johnson on the night of his fatal poisoning (guitar on "Traveling Riverside Blues"). --Alan Greenberg | ” |

This collection of JJ Cale spans over a period of twenty years, but as Cale's style and sounds have not changed very much over the years, the album comes out as a pretty consistent collection. Most tracks are easily as good as many of the songs that were originally released on his regular albums. On the other hand a lot of them do sound like alternate versions of well-known Cale songs…….

Born in Oklahoma City in 1938 but raised in Tulsa, OK, Cale played in a variety of rock & roll bands and Western swing groups as a teenager, including one outfit that also featured Leon Russell. In 1959, at the age of 21, he moved to Nashville, where he was hired by the Grand Ole Opry's touring company. After a few years, he returned to Tulsa, where he reunited with Russell and began playing local clubs. In 1964, Cale and Russell moved to Los Angeles with another local Oklahoma musician, Carl Radle……..

| “ | The Allmusic review of this compilation's original release boasts a Four Star rating and they call it "An absolutely first-rate album...The sound is excellent... An essential record, even for non-fans of the group". And you simply can't argue with that. But hey, why stop there; ".The sounds are melodic yet raw, and very, very soul-oriented, with a lean and muscular edge to the playing and singing alike - overall, the music is reminiscent of The Band in its prime years, only smoother when they need to be, with some interesting touches, such as their brilliant covers of the Beatles' 'Let It Be' and Ray Charles' 'Yes Indeed'." Yes folks, it really is that good. For those only familiar with the Cate Brothers' big 1975 hit 'Union Man', this welcome reissue of the long unavailable 'Arkansas Soul Siblings' collection - now lovingly repackaged - will be akin to visiting a long lost friend.Once again, this Broadside reissue has been re-mastered by the revered Tim Turan - so it now not only looks better than ever, it sounds like never before, too! - Review from Amazon.com | ” |
