James Clapperton, piano

Composer and neurologist Diego Minciacchi is as likely to publish a paper on motor skills as he is to compose music that mixes scientific and poetic ideas; yet this fact should not intimidate listeners new to his work, who might worry that the compositions on this 2005 release from Col Legno are too cerebral or complicated to appreciate. What they should know upfront, however, is that Minciacchi is a product of the generation of composers who absorbed the lessons of the 1960s and '70s avant-garde in their formative years, but instead of turning to neo-Romanticism, minimalism, or eclecticism in the 1990s, pushed the experimental envelope even further. Minciacchi studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen and Horaţiu Rădulescu, among other teachers, and much of their hardcore modernist influence is apparent in this collection of piano works, composed between 1979 and 2003. Indeed, the use of the term Klavierstück seems intended to invoke the spirit of Stockhausen, rather more than Liszt or Schumann, and the fairly cryptic subtitles of these pieces may suggest a connection to Rădulescu's mystifying practice, notably in his Lao Tzu Sonatas for piano, which are also allusively subtitled.

Tuxedomoon - Holy Wars (1985)
"Holy Wars": TM's most mature album also happens to be their best-seller, and is released all around the world. Recorded in 1985 while the band are at the peak of their popularity in Europe. Some of the most poignant and moving songs ("Some Guys", "In a Manner of Speaking", "Bonjour Tristesse", "Holy Wars"), and new instrumental colours: Blaine Reininger has left the band, and is replaced by Dutch trumpet and harmonica player Luc van Lieshout. Among other subjects, the lyrics are about wandering in the new European megapolis: Wim Wenders recognizes some of his own obsessions, and uses "Some Guys" in the opening scenes of "The Sky Above Berlin".

Kaizers Orchestra - Maskineri (2008)
Alternative Rock | MP3 320 Kbps | Covers | 100 Mb
Label: Kaizer Records | Language: Norwegian

Kaizers Orchestra is a Norwegian alternative rock group formed on January 1, 2000. The two leading members, vocalist Janove Ottesen and guitarist Geir Zahl, had known each other for years, and first played together in a band called Blod, Snått & Juling in 1989.
Kaizers Orchestra are notable for being among the first non-black metal Norwegian bands or artists singing in their native language to become popular in non-Scandinavian Europe. To other Norwegians, the band is instantly recognizable both because of their unique, unpredictable style, and because of vocalist Ottesen's marked Bryne dialect, shared by four of the other band members.

Label: Jmt (834431-2) | Recording Date Jun 1989

Tim Berne's music on his CD sometimes looks a little toward Anthony Braxton's free bop lines but also incorporates some electronics, unusual instrumental textures and some just plain weird sounds. Among the miscellaneous instruments listed are Mark Dresser's giffus and bungy, Herb Robertson's Laryngeal crowbar and Joey Baron's shacktronics; obviously these performances are not devoid of humor. The "medley" of "Hong Kong Sad Song" and "More Coffee" features Robertson's passionate wa-wa trumpet over exotic rhythms and Tim Berne on a staccotoish alto solo. "Now Then" recalls the original Chico Hamilton Quintet. The first half of "The Telex Blues" is a good joke with a distorted nonsensical voice almost drowned out by feedback (as if it were a long distance call that did not quite connect) although the performance does go on too long. An episodic "SEP" and the 19-minute multi-sectioned "Evolution Of A Pearl" (which ranges from sound explorations to avant-funk) wrap up this esoteric yet listenable set.

Steffen Schleiermacher

Although his late piano pieces (Triadic Memories or in particual [sic] For Bunita Marcus) are much longer than Piano, they still seem more one-dimensional: Occasional single notes are perpetually modified in their order, rhythm and their "orchestration". They seem first to linger then slowly fade away thus creating an atmosphere of calmness and seemingly infinite time. In contrast Piano comes across as a dramatic piece: each section is clearly defined, choral units alternate with unisonous sequences, partly set in the extreme ranges of the piano. And, completely out of the ordinary, Feldman's music suddenly becomes very loud . . . Compared to his other late compositions, Palais de Mari is rather short. And it has an air of "easy listening": consonant intervals dominate, the patterns used are simple and straightforward. Palais de Mari lacks the strange brittleness that is characteristic for For Bunita Marcus as well as the artful permutation in Triadic Memories, nor does it have the dramatic impact of Piano. Is Palais de Mari therefore the resigned produce of an aged artist?

National Philharmonic of London, Alan Hovhaness conducting; John Alldis Choir; Martyn Hill, tenor; John Wilbraham, solo trumpet; Sidney Sax, solo violin
Philharmonia Orchestra, David Amos, conductor

Early in his eclectic education Hovhaness (1911-2000) developed a passion for the mysticism of sound, which was fed by exposure to Armenian, Japanese and Chinese cultures. When combined with his formal studies at the New Eangland conservatory, the result is a compositional synthesis of both Western and Oriental styles, fashioned in such away as to be uniquely accessible to listeners of all musical tastes.

HI. When I was in the Netherlands some months ago I explored some cd shops and I found this cd that seems is coming from an OOP Dutch magazine. After listening to it I thought that might be posted here due to its detailed performance of Berio's Sinfonía. Schat's Etudes are another excellent work, so , please: Enjoy!
