| “ | Review [by theo_kal (Winnipeg, Manitoba)]: This album from start to finish is always great to listen to, whereas her other albums always seem to carry one or two tracks that I feel are somewhat harder to appreciate than the others. She got a bad review for this because she wasn't singing about hobos, diners etc. anymore (her Tom Waits period), and somehow, singing about her own experiences and reflections on life was considered too weak by the experts (ie. Allmusic's). Anyways, this album alone feels like it reflects North American suburban life from the 80's on for me, whereas her earlier ones remind me more of the 70's period (traces of the western slopes being an exception). It's as if she creates accurate reflections of the mood of these places through her words and music, something I've only noticed from her material alone, which makes her sort of like the Cezanne of pop or something to me. The other albums I heard of her, are also enjoyable, but they don't speak to me like this one, so I just groove on the sounds more or less. They are sort of more removed, a portrait of someone else's vibes, but if you got the blues in the suburbs, I feel this one is great to listen to in the car on an overcast day. The original LP and cassette had French lyrics on the second last track, they are entitled, "Marrants D'Eau Douce", but on 1990 American CDs there is an instrumental version instead which subtracts from the cosmopolitan beauty of it a bit. I have never found out why this was done. | ” |
