Review: Madeline Peyroux has been charming all along. If you are a lover of Billie Holiday's singing, you can't help but enjoy the similarities. What makes Bare Bones special, which it is, are the songs, all of which were written for this project. Lots of people had a hand in it, but there is a consistent richness and depth to the words, with lovely well-played music in a spare setting. Many songs linger with me, such as River of Tears and Our Lady of Pigalle. I expect to listen to this for a long time. Peyroux is applying her vocal skill to material that is personal, perhaps confessional in nature. Whether or not autobiographical, there is a sharing of intimacy and evocation that makes it a compelling work.

Note: The third album in four years from song interpreter extraordinaire Madeleine Peyroux, Bare Bones is both an extension of the currents of 2004's Careless Love and 2006's Half the Perfect World and a bold step into previously unexplored psychological terrain.
