This transcendent, lyrical and enigmatic tale of duality and yearning is one of the most acclaimed films by the masterful Polish auteur Krzysztof Kieslowski, director of 'Dekalog' and 'Three Colours' trilogy. 'Red' star Irène Jacob is utterly captivating in the twin roles of Veronique and Weronika, two young women leading totally separate lives in France and Poland, yet each strangely aware of the other's presence. Despite their different backgrounds, the two share not only many of the same likes, foibles and prodigious musical talents, but also the same wisdom, inspiring one to unconsciously avoid making the same mistakes in life as the other. Co-written by Kieslowski's regular collaborator Krzysztof Piesiewicz, and shot by 'Dekalog' and 'Blue' cinematographer Slawomir Idziak, the film also features a haunting and unforgettable score by the incomparable Zbigniew Preisner. (-DVD cover)

Each of us is matched somewhere in the world, by our exact double - someone who shares our thoughts and dreams (IMDb Tagline)

Weronika lives in Poland. Veronique lives in Paris. They don't know each other. Veronika gets a place in a music school, works hard, but collapses and dies on her first performance. At this point, Veronique's life seems to take a turn and she decides not to be a singer... (http://imdb.com/title/tt0101765/plotsummary)

A woman is griped by a sudden sense of sadness. She is grieving but she is not sure why or for what. The feeling that something has gone missing in the world haunts her. Such is the start of the movie "The Double Life of Veronique". (www.amazon.com)

Krzysztof Kieslowski’s international breakthrough remains one of his most beloved films, a ravishing, mysterious rumination on identity, love, and human intuition. Irène Jacob is incandescent as both Weronika, a Polish choir soprano, and her double, Véronique, a French music teacher. Though unknown to each other, the two women share an enigmatic, purely emotional bond, which Kieslowski details in gorgeous reflections, colors, and movements. Aided by Slawomir Idziak’s shimmering cinematography and Zbigniew Preisner’s haunting, operatic score, Kieslowski creates one of cinema’s most purely metaphysical works: The Double Life of Véronique is an unforgettable symphony of feeling. (www.amazon.com)

Irene Jacob carries her emotional burden lightly in a nuanced turn as the protagonist Veronique/Veronika. The sepia-toned fantasy film explores the idea of the soul of one trapped in another body. One life is influenced by the other as they look for fulfillment of their twin destinies, in music and love. Irene's face has that searching innocence which is used to good effect here. Kieslowski's direction utilizes those 'exalted silences' which are a hallmark of European cinema. Irene's Best Actress Award at Cannes is well deserved. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0101765/usercomments)

"Double Life of Veronique" is one of those rare films that just begs to be analyzed. Is it about being puppets in some enormous scheme of things? About fate? Sacrifice? Love? One woman's soul in two bodies? Political symbolism? Or is it simply about some mysterious dimension of the spiritual? The symbols and metaphors can be unwound any which way, and in the end they all work. Even the ending is ambiguous -- is it happy, or sad? (www.amazon.com)

Krzysztof Kieslowski's direction is impeccable. His use of light and shadow, and the atmospheric music, make "Double Life" practically a work of art. He dots "Double Life" with plenty of little hints about the inner states of the characters. The stars and leaves, for example, hint at the personalities of Weronika and Veronique -- one a dreamer, one down-to-earth. Kieslowski also used a minimalist approach to dialogue, often using pauses and silence that speak louder than the ordinary words. (www.amazon.com)

hi FNB.47
unfortunately some of your links have been deleted
you'd better use the abbreviation instead of complete names in links to avoid this problem
by the way do you have any films from Imamura or Kinugasa or Oshima?
thanks a lot in advance!

Hello "teodorek",

3 weeks ago RS deleted 32 of my movies which I had uploaded earlier. They are the ones in the second part (second half) of the 65 movies' list :
http://www.avaxhome.ws/misc_and_web/movies_1_to_65.html

I think our dear friend "ramin" means those 32 movies... not Kieslowski's "Veronique"... because Veronique's links are alive at the moment (as "Barthes2" states above).
