A classic, perfectly cast and beautifully photographed film, “Tristana”is a twisted, haunting study of sexual politics and the nature of freedom, and it was Buñuel's last film to be shot in his native Spain.
“Tistana” is late Buñuel, a mockingly sensible black comedy which is as much about the decay of Spain as about the inter-relationship of its characters.
In 1930's Toledo, newly orphaned beauty Tristana (Catherine Deneuve) is left in the care of aging atheist and fallen aristocrat Don Lope (Fernando Ray).
The dutiful and innocent girl duly becomes Don Lope's mistress, but when she meets handsome, young but uninspiring Horacio (Franco Nero), power changes hands and Tristana becomes increasingly embittered when fate plays a nasty trick on her.

Spanish government, which banned Buñuel to make another film in his native country after the scandalous "Viridiana", finally granted him permission to shoot "Tristana" (a name derived from "triste", "sad") in Toledo, the quintessential Spanish city, and one virtually unchanged for centuries.
