A rural clergyman in 19th century England tells Durbeyfield, a simple farmer, that he is descended from the illustrious d'Urberville family -- now extinct. Or maybe not. Durbeyfield sends his daughter Tess to check on a family named d'Uberville living in a manor house less than a day's carriage ride away. Alec d'Urberville is delighted to meet his beautiful "cousin" and seduces her with strawberries and roses. Actually Alec has gotten his illustrious name and coat of arms by purchasing them. Tess too takes up the game of illusion when she finds, loses and finds again her true love Angel (http://imdb.com/title/tt0080009/plotsummary)
The mists...the sounds of footsteps on the dirt roads... the ambling horse... the elflike man that appears at the Cross in Hands, Tess' walk to her Inlaws church, The dripping water, The taking of the boots, the misplaced letter, the milk run, the puddle in the road, the dripping milk pouches, The strawberry, the blood stain, The burial, Stonehenge...Everything is beautifully shot. It lingers in the mind long after viewing. Geoffrey Unsworth's final cinematographic film. Thank you for all your beautiful work. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0080009/usercomments)
Roman Polanski directs a sublime historical drama that is dense with meaning. Some might find it a bit slow (depending on your tastes) but I felt it was skillfully paced and appropriate. This is one of those rare films of past-life where you are taken back in time. Every detail carries with it a verisimilitude that makes Tess's struggle all the more tangible. I especially appreciated the lighting, which felt natural instead of a finely-polished commercial. Nastassja Kinski's performance, while not extraordinary, is memorable and convincing. You can tell she put a lot of thought in every moment of her character's story. Though Peter Firth impressed me the most; I hated his actions and yet cared about his journey, wanting him to admit to his irrational behavior. Though really, this film is a testament to Mr. Polanski's skill as a director. If one needs proof in the power of image, the poetics of simplicity, then look no further then the scene where Tess finds the note she wrote to Angel, stuck underneath the rug, unread. The camera is blinded by the sun as she accepts her destiny and crumbles the note in her hand. This is a true classic, timeless and worth a viewing if you like intelligent film-making. While watching the story unfold, I realized how alien our social morals were back then and how alien our social morals will probably look generations from now. Details, such as the whiteness of the maids' dresses, the sound of milk squirting into a bucket, the sloshing mud of a wet English turnip field, and the glint of adoration in the eyes of the young lovers -- all came gloriously to life as if fresh off the pages of the book. Thomas Hardy created a pure woman in Tess. That is why her plight is so tragic. She possesses a strong spirit that is oppressed by the male political and religious world around her. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0080009/usercomments)
This film was dedicated to Polanski's wife Sharon Tate, who was murdered under orders from Charles Manson. Tate gave Polanski a copy of the novel as she boarded the liner back to the United States, the last time they would see each other. Polanski dedicated this movie to his late wife, Sharon Tate, who was killed in 1969 by the Manson Clan. Before her death, she had read the novel by Thomas Hardy and was convinced that her husband would one day make a great film based on the novel. The dedication in the beginning of the film simply states "For Sharon".

The melody that Angel plays on the recorder is a popular Polish folk song, "Laura i Filon". Since it is rather unlikely that a 19th century Englishman would know this tune, it is safe to assume that this is something that Polanski (of Polish descent) used the tune as a "trademark" of sorts. Director of Photography Geoffrey Unsworth died of a heart attack during the third week of shooting at the end of October 1978. Most of the film's scenes shot by him were exteriors in the first half of the movie and can be noticed by some fog and slight diffusion. Ghislain Cloquet shot the second half and the remaining of the movie with most of his scenes in interiors with no diffusion. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0080009/trivia)
