The film is based on a Georgian legend and on a Georgian folk song. In order to ward off foreign invaders, the people want to build a fortress; but every time the walls are house-high they collapse. A fortune teller prophesies : "The walls will stand if the most handsome young man is bricked up in it". There is in fact a youth Zurab, who is conscientiously and joyfully ready to sacrifice his life to rescue his native country.


Paradjanov's film stories are not linear, but develop in original structures through associations, moods and strictly defined metaphors. Only at the beginning do the different episodes seem to stand confusingly side by side, but then he skillfully combines them in a unique montage.


Despite the explosive political background of the film, which is "dedicated to the Georgians who gave up their lives fighting for their native country", it is most striking in the extraordinary stylistic method used.


About the director, Sergei Paradjanov : Born Sarkis Yossifovich Paradjanian in Tbilisi, Georgia USSR, of Armenian parents, in 1924. He studied vocal music at the Tbilisi Conservatory. Then he attended VGIK in Moscow from 1946 to 1951.
