A segment from the series 'Martin Scorsese presents : The Blues' (http://imdb.com/title/tt0287198/)
Produced by Martin Scorsese and helmed by seven major film directors, THE BLUES consists of seven feature-length films that capture the essence of the blues while exploring how this art form so deeply influenced music and people the world over. Wim Wenders, Mike Figgis, Clint Eastwood and others explore the blues through their own personal styles and perspectives.
The films in the series are motivated by a central theme: "How the blues evolved from parochial folk tunes to a universal language ?".
Mike Figgis, who is himself a musician, made a film about the British blues scene, in the form of a story told by many of its creators.
During the 1960s the UK was the location for a vibrant social revolution. The post-war traditional jazz and folk revival movements sowed the seeds -in fertile musical ground- for the roots of a new kind of blues music, entirely influenced by the authentic black blues of the USA. The British musicians at the heart of this musical revolution continued to pay homage to the originators of the music and to make a huge global audience aware of the likes of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Freddie King and others.
Mike Figgis' film mixes interviews with dozens of the key players of the British blues movement with new music from all-star jam session at the famous Abbey Road studios. Tom Jones, Jeff Beck, Lulu, Van Morrison and others revisit classical blues standarts, accompanied by a superb band of musicians. The results are electrifying. They talk about the music of the early sixties, British Invasion that reintroduced the blues sound to America.
Says Figgis : "I'm interested in why there was such excitement about this black music among Europeans. To that end, I've put together a group of these musicians, augmenting the line-up with some younger talents as well. Hopefully the resulting recording session of some blues standarts, and the discussion that follow, shine some light on why at a particular moment the blues was reinterpreted abroad and reintroduced in a new form that was universally embraced."
When you listen to John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, you are moved, your heart is shaken, you are carried and inspired by its visceral energy, and its rock solid emotional truth. You go rigth to the heart of what it is to be human, the condition of being human. That's The Blues.-Martin Scorsese.
