Monsieur Hulot has to contact an American official in Paris, but he gets lost in the maze of modern architecture which is filled with the latest technical gadgets. Caught in the tourist invasion, Hulot roams around Paris with a group of American tourists... (http://imdb.com/title/tt0062136/plotsummary)
Jacques Tati, the choreographer of the charming, comical ballet that is Playtime, casts the endearingly clumsy Monsieur Hulot as the principal character wandering through modernist Paris. Amid the babble of English, French and German tourists, Hulot tries to reconcile the old-fashioned ways with the confusion of the encroaching age of technology. (www.amazon.com)
Jacques Tati's masterwork has not looked better since its initial release. I can safely call this magnificent work of art a genuine cinematic masterpiece. For a commercially released feature, it is strikingly experimental in being virtually non-narrative--such tenuous story as there is involves a group of American tourists in Paris making the rounds as sightseers, with one young lady among them, Barbara, given slightly more prominence by the filmmaker. Tati also appears in the film as his alter ego, M. Hulot... (http://imdb.com/title/tt0062136/usercomments)
This is the kind of film that reminds a viewer just how standardized modern cinematic narrative has become. Tati exists in an alternate plane of recorded consciousness; I walked out of "Play" as if hallucinating, having fully entered his perspective and adopted his suggestions as my own (http://imdb.com/title/tt0062136/usercomments)
There is a common theme that runs throughout most, if not all, of Jacque Tati's films; the (re)discovery of playfulness and whimsy set against the mundane, almost inhumane environments of the contemporary technological world. "Playtime" is centered around the character M. Hulot, who runs amok in the modern unrecognizable cityscape of Paris. There is no clear plot or story only that here is a character that either causes or witnesses the breakdown of the modern living and working of today. There is nearly no dialogue, only ambient noise and visual absurdities. This is a tremendously fun film.... (http://imdb.com/title/tt0062136/usercomments)
This is the right movie for anyone who is tired of "modern" comedies. Aside from its stunning visuals and extremely clever use of sound effects (the film has nearly no dialogue), its humour is highly intelligent, not always obvious, and i must say that i was delighted to see a film that did not try to be funny all the time.
