One of the most nerve-wrecking and exciting films ever made, Henri-Georges Clouzot's masterpiece (it is also the film that made popular music hall singer Yves Montand into a movie star), won the Grand Prize at the 1953 Cannes Film Festival. An American oil company enlists four tough drifters for a high-paying suicide mission -transporting explosives across the rough terrain of Central America. This is the 148-minute director's cut of the film, including scenes censored for the 1954 U.S. theatrical release, and so the film comes across as being much more political. (-DVD Cover)

In the South American jungle supplies of nitroglycerene are needed at a remote oil field. The oil company pays four men to deliver the supplies in two trucks. A tense rivallry develops between the two sets of drivers and on the rough remote roads the slightest jolt can result in death. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0046268/plotsummary)

This is an extraordinary movie. From the opening scene showing the squalor of a Latin American town with filth and vultures in the street and naked children begging for food amid the oppressive, fly-stirred heat, to the finale on a winding mountain road, it is just plain fascinating. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0046268/usercomments)

This is such an original movie, every scene like little or nothing you've ever seen before (and for sure will never see again), that the little inconsistencies and some stretching of what is possible are not important. This is man against nature, man against himself reduced to a simple task. It is life in the raw. One mistake and you are dead.(http://imdb.com/title/tt0046268/usercomments)

So much is, in retrospect, amazing. There's the way Clouzot manages to show us the humanity in these seemingly squalid people. (Even the oil magnate, just when we think he's the world's most heartless capitalist, reveals he has a heart with an unexpected remark, and yet the remark doesn't feel at all out of character - it's the kind of masterful characterisation film-goers live for.) Then there's the obstacles these drivers must face. All are memorable; most are so perfectly realised they deserve to be called mythic. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0046268/usercomments)

Thanks a lot. It was very popular in the USSR,too -partly because of its political message and of course because of Montand being as communist (back then, and not for a long time)

Thanks a lot. :)
Hey FNB, it is not worth keeping AC3 mono track. Much better (and smaller!) to convert to lowgrade mono MP3. People can do that themselves though as you have done the hardest part!!
Thanks!
